Prep Community
Welcome to The Argus/Xenica Community Newsletter, this is the first newsletter of the term, and to kick things off, we have seen great adaptation on the student’s part. We have now arrived at the middle of term 3 and are amazed at the academic excellence portrayed by our students. We have organised a couple of events this term, including 100 days of prep and Book Week. Once again, we aspire to a great rest of the term for our students and hope they yield an abundant amount of knowledge through this term.
Reading
In Reading, we have continued developing narratives. Students have been working on narratives for a great amount of time and have a strong understanding of their structure and demands. These lessons are given for consolidation of their knowledge and for free writing to allow them to express their understanding. In the coming weeks, we will be shifting our attention to information reports and how they are structured. We are continuing CVC words and have officially reached phase 3, in which the understanding of the students will be challenged and administered.
Writing
We are also working on narratives in writing. Children are practising writing these texts to increase their understanding of narratives and how they are formatted/created. We provide students with several visual stimuli to help motivate their stories and guide their approach to the story. We are also still working on CVC words; children are proving to be able to segment sounds and write CVC words. We are still teaching students to create sentences and children are now learning how to create a sentence structure (capitalisation, spacing, and punctuation).
Maths
We have started a new topic of addition. To expand, we are teaching them how to solve basic addition problems using manipulatives and worded problems to challenge their learning. Teachers are using basal techniques such as friends of 10s and counters to help reinforce the amateur addition principles essential for further development. We have seen overall inordinate levels of success throughout the prep cohort in this area. In the coming weeks, we will be diverting our attention to patterns and data, a subject that hasn’t been exposed to students as of now.
