Year 3/4 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

After our first two action-packed weeks of Term 3, in 3/4 we’re spending lots of time engaged in learning about other countries as part of our Unit Focus, Great Southern Lands. Read below to see how this topic is featuring in our Maths, Reading and Writing lessons.

An important reminder that the paper copies of the CAMP FORMS are due to be returned, and that permission also needs to be given on Compass. Please also finalise payments as soon as possible, as they are due by August 16th.

Maths:

Over the last few weeks students have been building on their knowledge of multiplicative thinking. They are making connections between multiplication and division, via the visual model of arrays and then moving into more formal ways of recording. Even though we continue to make learning our times tables a big focus, the emphasis is on developing efficient strategies rather than rote learning number facts! Knowing our multiplication facts for x2 and x4 means understanding the strategy of doubling, then doubling again! Knowing our x3 facts means realising that we simply double a number and then add one more group… What strategies do you use when you think of multiplying? Please encourage your children to practise their facts at home!

Additionally, we have begun to explore data displays and interpret different types of graphs about various climates as part of integrating with our Great Southern Lands unit.

Literacy:

In Reading, students have continued researching our Great Southern Lands unit, which explores countries in the Southern Hemisphere and how they are similar and different to Australia. Students individually or with a partner have chosen a country to base their research project on. We have been focusing on note taking while researching to record the main ideas and write them down as dot points.

In Writing, students have begun creating information reports about their chosen country. Using their notes taken in Reading lessons, children are creating their own paragraphs with different focuses such as climate, animals, and vegetation that are found in their country. We are looking at using full sentences and ensuring that they are using their own words, not just repeating what they have read in other texts.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

  • In Writing, students will continue to research and create an in-depth information report about a country of their choice in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • In Reading, students will continue to practise their note taking skills to support the creation of their information report.
  • In Maths, we will be developing our multiplication and division strategies.
  • Some students will be attending the District Sports Carnival to compete against other schools in a range of athletic sports.
  • Complete camp payment finalised by Friday August 16th.
  • We will hold an online parent information session about our upcoming Camp to Arrabri Lodge.
