Today we are celebrating a BSB30120 Certificate III in Business and a SIT20421 Certificate II in Cookery student @Armidale Secondary College
India, a dedicated student at Armidale Secondary College, has taken on the challenge of studying two VET subjects for her HSC, a BSB30120 Certificate III in Business and SIT20421 Certificate II in Cookery. Originally from Thailand, India moved to Armidale last year and chose these courses to explore new opportunities and gain practical skills.
Why Business Services? India chose the Business Services VET course because it offered work placement, something she hadn't experienced before. "I wanted to try something different and see what it was like," she shared. The course has provided her with valuable work experience and a better understanding of the business world.
Benefits of the VET Course India highlights the real-life experience gained from work placements as a major benefit. "It really prepares you for getting a job in the future," she said. Her placement at the Armidale Council allowed her to work in various departments, including the library and visitor centre, where she learned how to communicate professionally and gained confidence in the business sector.
Skills and Software Throughout the Business Services course, India has become proficient in using software like Excel, Google Docs, and email, which has been essential for planning and scheduling tasks. She learned these skills through hands-on experience, often paired with mentors who guided her through real-life applications.
Advice for Future Business Services Students India advises students interested in the course to be prepared for the mix of theory and practical work. "It can be boring sometimes, but it's really good to learn those skills for any business," she noted, emphasising the importance of learning how to use Excel and communicate professionally.
A Passion for Hospitality In addition to Business Services, India is also passionate about Hospitality/Cookery. She enjoys the hands-on work experience in restaurants and cafes, which she finds particularly engaging. "I like the work experience we get in the restaurants and cafes," she said.
Work Placement in Hospitality India completed her Hospitality work placements at Café Patisserie and the Goldfish Bowl Bakery, where she was involved in food prep, chopping, and even making tarts and quiches. These experiences taught her how to use different types of machinery and understand the organisational aspects of running a café.
Advice for Aspiring Hospitality Students India recommends that students interested in VET Cookery have some basic skills before starting she advised, highlighting the importance of being familiar with basic kitchen tools and procedures.
Balancing Both Courses Managing both Business Services and Hospitality has been challenging, but India has kept up with everything. When asked which course she prefers, she leans towards Hospitality because of the hands-on experience it offers.
India Morphett’s journey at Armidale Secondary College is a testament to her commitment to learning and gaining practical skills in both business and hospitality, setting a strong foundation for her future.
