GREEN TEAM
On Friday, the first day of May, the Green Team gathered in Brendan’s Garden to see how much it had grown over the school holidays and to plan the next steps.
Several garden beds had finished producing and were ready to be cleared for winter planting. Over the holidays, Mrs Coggin prepared the cucumber bed and one of the cherry tomato beds, planting broccoli and garlic seedlings that students had grown in Term One. These seedlings have established well and are thriving in the garden.
On Friday, the corn and large tomato beds were also cleared and prepared. After turning the soil, students planted cauliflower seedlings—an eye-catching variety called Highway, which produces a beautiful pinky-purple head. We look forward to watching them grow.
Students also began an investigation into growing carrots. They are exploring which method is more successful: planting seeds in compostable pots with seed-raising mix, or using seed tape directly in the ground. We look forward to sharing the results in a few months.
After all their hard work, students were excited to harvest tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, capsicum and snow peas. There was also plenty of curiosity about the pumpkins, which will be ready to harvest in a few more weeks.
