Wellbeing & Engagement

Welcome back! We have had a brilliant start to 2024. In part this is due to Goondiwindi State School's commitment to teaching Social and Emotional learning to all students, resulting in;

  • improved social and emotional skills, self-concept, bonding to school and classroom behaviour.
  • less disruptive classroom behaviour, aggression and bullying
  • reduced emotional distress such as depression, stress or social withdrawal.
  • improved academic performance.

We teach Social and Emotional learning in a variety of ways including PBL lessons and Respectful Relationships Education.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

We use PBL lessons to teach our schoolwide expectations and routines.  The lessons are chosen based on behaviour data that is analysed at PBL meetings, so students are being taught explicit expectations and positive behaviours.

For example, last week's lesson empowered students to solve a minor problem themselves. It also taught children that sometimes everyone needs help to solve a problem.

Respectful Relationships Education (RRE)

At GSPS we teach Respectful Relationships.  The RESPECT program gives students opportunities for social and emotional learning with a focus on developing and maintaining respectful relationships and respecting themselves.  Topics covered include proactive communication, friendship, inclusion and belonging, personal strengths and conflict management.

Wellbeing

Being healthy, confident and resilient is a foundation that supports learning. With a focus on your child's wellbeing, we create a positive environment that supports your child's learning.  Each and every student begins their day at GSPS with a check in with their class teacher, beginning the day in a positive and personal way. You too can help contribute to your child's success at school.

5 ways to help your child succeed at school:

  1.  A good night’s sleep and healthy food will ensure your child is ready for a good day at school.
  2. Keep screen time to the national recommendation of 2 hours/day - this includes TV.
  3. Talk with your child about school – What did they enjoy? What was interesting about the day? Who did they chat with? What did they learn? Keep it positive!
  4. Everyday counts at school. Learning and connecting positively with peers happens every day in classrooms from 8:50 am.
  5. Work with the school to support your child to reach their potential. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school to talk about your child's progress and attend Parent/Teacher interviews when offered.

Team Up

This year our year five students are engaging in The Team Up program facilitated by the PCYC's Senior Seargent Jason Watts and PCYC Trish Morris. The Team Up program contains a variety of practical activities designed to build crucial life skills, with the weekly program including activities that aim to build resilience, emotional intelligence, conflict resolution, social competencies and skills around communication, patience, assertiveness and problem solving.

Attendance

Did you know?  Research shows that in Queensland, higher student attendance at school is associated with higher student achievement.

A set routine can help improve your child's attendance and academic outcomes

• have a set time to go to bed

• have a set time to get out of bed

• have uniform and school bag ready the night before

• have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast

• set a time for daily homework activities

• speak about school positively

• be firm, send your child to school every school day including their birthday- they can celebrate it with their friends!
