Staff take on the Oxfam Trailwalker challenge

Congratulations to Lucas Collins, Head of Junior School, and Karen Bryce, VCE Coordinator, for their stellar efforts in The Oxfam Trailwalker event this past weekend.

The team walk, organised to raise funds for Oxfam, witnessed impressive efforts from both Lucas and Karen within their respective teams.

‘Luc and the Skywalkers’ traversed 100km of terrain and walked for 18-hours through day and night. They managed to raise $5,500 for Oxfam - a fantastic result!

Lucas summed up his experience this way:

'So proud of our teamwork, not only during the massive trek, but the hours of training leading up to it. My friends and I couldn't have done it without each other. My blisters have blisters, but worth it for the funds raised for such an amazing cause.'

Here's Karen's account of her Trailwalker experience.

'Our route was 33km. It was supposed to be a leisurely wander through the Dandenongs, however, due to storm damage at Lysterfield Lake and Churchill Park, the route went from a Level 2 to a Level 4 in difficulty.

We left from Silvan Dam, walked through Olinda and then down to the bottom of the 1000 Steps, turned around and returned to Silvan Dam. I’m not entirely sure of our time, about 12 hours, but we weren’t in any hurry!

One of my team mates was Kilvonian Bronnie Dean. We went through Years 5 to 12 together and reconnected at a reunion about 10 years ago. Since then, I've ended up doing five Oxfam Trail walks with her!'

Well done to both Lucas and Karen for taking on this wonderful challenge!

Teacher-made documentary on Holocaust survivor for Years 9 to 12 students

Well done to Lucie Dickens, Kilvington’s Academic Dean of Languages, for her remarkable achievement in co-creating an outstanding education kit and documentary centered around 99-year-old Holocaust survivor Esther 'Odette' Wise.

Designed as a resource for Years 9 to 12 French students, Lucie's short film, titled N'oubliez jamais – Never Forget, is the result of seven months of dedicated effort by Lucie and her colleagues from the Association of French Teachers of Victoria.

Lucie acted as Co-Director and Executive Producer of the film which was recently launched at a special event attended by Pierre-Andre Imbert, France's Ambassador to Australia, Ms Wise’s family, and Kilvington staff, including Principal Rob French, Jacqui Goldenberg and Jon Williams.

The audience was deeply moved by the documentary, and we congratulate Lucie, Co-Director Antoine Hobbs, and all involved in its creation.

Publication of new VCE English text

Sonia Murr, Academic Dean of English, alongside Hoppers Crossing Secondary’s Director of English, Ernest Price, recently co-authored a comprehensive guide for VCE English teachers titled VATE Inside Frameworks, VCE English - Creating Texts.

Their framework, sections of which were designed, shaped, polished, and piloted at Kilvington by our Year 12 Faculty, has been an impressive collaboration. Over the past year, their guide has been shared with our broader Victorian teaching community

Sonia reflects on her experience:

'For the past 12 months, this endeavor has been a labour of love for Ernest and I. I'm so proud of my team and the role of Kilvington in leading curriculum design for this area of study through VATE.'

New Character Initiative

Martine Walls, Head of Character and Wellbeing, has announced a new initiative as part of Kilvington’s Character and Wellbeing strategy - The Character Development Team. This remarkable team is made up of passionate staff across the School who have volunteered their time to make a real difference to the wellbeing of students and staff.

Kilvington has long been committed to the character building and wellbeing space. In fact, we were one of the first schools in Australia, if not the first, to build a comprehensive learning framework from ELC to Year 12 that explicitly teaches character.

Stay tuned for more updates as we further develop this initiative!
