Library News

Fiona O'Rourke, Head of Library and Digital Resourcing

The School Library is not just a place for books; it's also a hub for discovery, learning and community. We look forward to seeing your children in the Library and hearing about their experiences with our diverse collection.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY READING LIST

In anticipation of International Women's Day, we have curated a special reading list that showcases the lives and achievements of remarkable women. From historical figures to contemporary heroes, these stories are sure to inspire our students and our wider school community.

Our young learners have been engaging with the book This Girl Can by Katie Alexander, a wonderful story that challenges stereotypes and encourages children to believe that they can achieve anything, regardless of gender.

Our Years 3 to 6 students have been captivated by Eat my Dust by Neridah McMullin, an extraordinary true story of Jean Robertson and Kathleen Howell, who played pivotal roles in mapping Australia. This book not only educates, but also inspires our students with examples of women's contributions to science and exploration.

ONLINE CATALOGUE - ORBIT

Our Years 1 and 2 students were recently introduced to our online catalogue, Orbit. This tool is essential for fostering independence in their learning journey, allowing them to explore our collection from both school and home. We encourage parents to explore Orbit with their children. Here is the link to access our collection from home.

THE ROVING TEACHER LIBRARIAN

Where is Ms O'Rourke this week?

As a part of our Library Program, I am scheduled to work with different classes across the Junior School to support research skills. This includes locating relevant information, note taking and giving credit to avoid plagiarism.

This week, I am collaborating with Year 1 on their Science inquiry into ‘Minibeasts’. Using Orbit, students will learn how they can access curated content in LearnPath to support their research about their chosen insect.

ACCESS OUR eBOOK AND AUDIOBOOK COLLECTION

All students have access to our eBook and audiobook collection via Wheelers. We are excited to share that Wheelers now has Decodables for our younger readers.

To start reading on Wheelers, just download the Wheelers app from your app store and search for Kilvington Grammar. Use your School login details to authenticate, and then enjoy browsing, sampling, borrowing and reserving a wide range of eBooks.

If you need support, please do not hesitate to contact us at library@kilvington.vic.edu.au.

HARMONY DAY CHALLENGE - #WEBELONG

As Harmony Day approaches, we are committed to promoting diversity and combatting racism through literature.

We invite our students and their families to participate in our 'MacMillan Reading Without Walls' inspired tournament. To participate, all you need to do is:

  1. Read a book about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you.
  2. Read a book about a topic you know little about.
  3. Read a book in a format you don’t normally read for fun (eg graphic novel, book in verse, audiobook, or ebook).

Will you accept the challenge?
