Overviews:

As our year gets underway here are the plans for Term 1 in the Performing Arts area:

Year 5/6 are learning about the "History of Rock and Roll", with famous artists such as

  • Bill Hayley and the Comets, Chuck Berry
  • Elvis
  • The Beatles
  • Soul Music: Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Ray Charles
  • Surf Music: The Beach Boys
  • Woodstock

Year 3/4 students are doing a unit of work entitled "Rhythms, Raps and Rhymes" and will look at reading and writing music in groups of 3 or 4 beats. This will prepare them for reading music notation and then learning the recorder later in the year.

Year 1/2 students are discovering the difference between "Beat and Rhythm". They will learn how to notate simple rhythms using Taa, Ti-Ti and Zaa. Later in the term "Pitch and Melody" will be explored and everyone will get to play the marimbas and xylophones in our band room!

Foundation classes have just begun looking at our "Common percussion instruments" and will learn their names and sounds. They will move their bodies and play these instruments while keeping the beat. Listening skills will be developed as students take turns and play softly, loudly, slowly and quickly. Pitch will also be introduced later in the term as students hear the difference between HIGH and LOW notes.

Choirs:

Junior choir is available for any student in grades 1-3 (Thursday lunchtime for about 30 mins) and Senior choir is for those in grades 4-6 (Friday lunchtime 30 minutes)
