From the Principal

I would like to begin my first community newsletter for the year by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land we are on, the Bunurong people of the Kulin nation. I recognise their connection to land and understand the importance and responsibility we all have by continuing to look after the land.  I would also like to pay my respects to their Elders past and present.

Welcome to the 2024 school year at Mornington Secondary College, with a special welcome to our Year 7 students and families.

The year began very positively with all students involved in year level assemblies outlining the year ahead. Our whole school assembly welcomed all students with a special mention to the class of 2024 Year 12 students and our Year 7 students. It was lovely to see families of Year 7 students joining us for assembly.

During the assemblies, new staff were introduced.

They are:

Sally Hannemann, working in the Pathways Office

Susan Cook working in the General Office

AFL Trainees - Zarah Carnie and Emily Jerkovic

Britt Nelson back from maternity leave

Students were also informed of the new Student Service Office. The office is located at the canteen end of the Admin building and anything to assist students will be the focus of this office.

There will be 3 staff in this office waiting to assist you.

Nicole Spicer will be supporting students in Year 7-9,

Fi Cornwall will support students in Year 10-12,

Shellie Farnill with extra-curricular activities.

However, it will not matter what year level a student is in, the staff will assist all students. Some of the things they will assist with will be:

  • Collecting and/or storing mobile phones
  • Queries about buses, camps, excursions etc
  • Handing in medical certificates
  • Late passes (needed whenever you are late to school or a class)
  • Uniform passes (once class has started)
  • First Aid
  • Uniform support

During the assemblies, the goals of our school were also highlighted. At Mornington Secondary College we have two goals, they are:

  1. To maximise the achievement and learning growth of every student
  2. To improve the engagement and wellbeing of all.

To assist in achieving these goals there are processes in place to connect and engage students in their learning. During assemblies, the following processes were mentioned:

- Classroom expectations and routines were outlined including an entry routine, a cue to start work and an exit routine. Posters explaining these routines can be found in every classroom.

- Any student late to school or late to class will now go to the Student Services office to receive a late pass. This late pass is to be given to the classroom teacher and will be recorded on Compass.

- If anyone is out of uniform, students have been informed they will need to go to the Year Level Coordinators office for a uniform pass, before school, if they have a note from home explaining why they are out of uniform and they are to carry the uniform pass with them all day. If students present with no note, the year level coordinator will follow up with the student. During the day students will need to go to the Student Services Office to collect a pass.

- Extra-curricular activities were also highlighted including college production, drum corp, instrumental music and sport squads such as: Athletics, Basketball, Netball, Football and Swimming.  All students are encouraged to ‘get involved’ and make this year a fantastic enjoyable year.

I am confident that this will be a year filled with growth, success, and unforgettable experiences. Thank you for being a part of our school community, and let's make this year the best one yet!

Each student also has a Connect teacher who is generally the best first point of contact. Your child’s Connect teacher sees them each day during Period 1. All teachers have been asked to make contact by email to introduce themselves and most have done that during the 2023 Fast Forward program in Nov/Dec of last year. For administrative support, Fiona Cornwall is the Senior School Student Support Officer and can assist you with your enquiries, including attendance/absence notifications.

In 2024, there will be a strong focus on the academic progress being made by each student in each class, every day. Mornington SC students are here to learn, to strive for their personal best and to be respectful Mornington citizens ready to make a positive difference in our community. We have high expectations for our students, and we can’t wait to work in partnership with you and our students to achieve these outcomes.

Change is as good as a holiday

Welcome back to all our students and families for the 2024 school year. This year promises to be a fantastic year full of great learning experiences and opportunities for everyone. The old adage “you get out of things what you put into them” couldn’t be truer than at school.  Students who work hard in class enjoy their studies more, they form better relationships with their teachers and achieve higher results. Similarly, students who get involved in the broader aspects of College life feel a stronger sense of connection to the College and achieve more. So let’s collectively encourage our kids to work hard and get involved in school life.

Kind regards,

Mike Parker

Assistant Principal
