Top Design by Jasmine
Congratulations to Jasmine Goon (Class of 2023), who has been selected to exhibit their VCE Product Design and Technology work in Top Designs 2024 at Melbourne Museum.
Top Designs is an annual exhibition co-ordinated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) in partnership with Museums Victoria, showcasing outstanding design works made by VCE and VCE VET students from schools across the state.
This year, only 92 works were selected for the exhibition from over 1,000 applications. Selected works exemplify the innovation, skill and creativity that can be achieved within the Victorian Curriculum.
The selection for Top Designs follows a rigorous process as the 150 submissions for Product Design - Textiles are sorted and shortlisted to folio, final work and then selection for exhibition. Jasmine is one of 16 students whose work has been selected for exhibition.
Referring to her work as ‘a utility jumpsuit for fine artists’, Jasmine’s product statement suggests a substantial uniform identity for fine artists to wear with multiple functions to use in a studio art context daily. In her product, Jasmine created ‘convenience, storage, comfort and protection from mess along with an increase in efficiency and effectiveness of the art making process’. Jasmine understates her product in terms of ‘Good Design is Sustainable Design’. If we look closely at the jumpsuit images, it becomes clear Jasmine’s design exemplifies the re-use of materials supporting environmental, social and economic sustainability.
This context is core to the work of all contemporary designers with Jasmine’s work being constructed from 5 pairs of second-hand, ready for landfill jeans. Complex and detailed in design and making, we are not at all surprised Jasmine’s work has been selected for celebration in exhibition.
Top Designs will run from Saturday 23 March until Sunday 14 July at the Melbourne Museum, 11 Nicholson St, Carlton.
