The summer holidays bring excitement and freedom, but they can also be challenging for some children. Without their familiar school structure and daily contact with friends, certain kids may experience feelings of disconnection or worry. Maintaining some consistency during this period, such as predictable sleep patterns and a loose daily framework, can make a real difference. Consider sitting down together to map out a flexible weekly rhythm that works for your family.
Creating a Wellbeing Toolkit
Work with your child to develop their own personal wellbeing toolkit for the break. Together, identify activities that lift their spirits, people they can reach out to when needed, and strategies they find helpful when emotions feel overwhelming. This collaborative approach empowers children to recognize and respond to their own needs.
Finding Balance in the Break
While relaxing the usual routine is part of the holiday appeal, maintaining some gentle structure around sleep and wake times provides helpful anchors. You might encourage your child to choose a positive morning ritual, perhaps journaling, stretching, or listening to music, and a calming evening activity like drawing or reading. These small practices support emotional regulation and create bookends to their day.
Making Space for Joy
Holidays offer precious time for the things that often get squeezed out during term time: pursuing interests, connecting with friends and family, and simply being. A mix of active and restful activities helps children recharge properly.
Managing Screen Time Thoughtfully
Consider establishing reasonable boundaries around device use to help your child avoid the pitfalls of constant connectivity: comparison, social pressure, and sleep disruption among them. This remains one of parenting's trickier challenges, but the benefits are worth the effort.
Staying Connected to Support
If you have ongoing concerns about your child's emotional wellbeing, continuing existing support arrangements or scheduling check-ins with your GP during the holidays ensures they know help is available. Regular touchpoints communicate your care and attention.
