Exploring Location, Direction and Coding with Bee-Bots!

Over the past few weeks, our students have been buzzing with excitement as they explore spatial language, direction and early coding skills using Bee-Bots - our fun programmable floor robots!

Through hands-on challenges and guided investigations, students have been learning to describe locations using key words such as between, near, next to, forwards and towards. They have practised explaining where objects are in the classroom, describing their own position, and using the same language to guide their Bee-Bots around grids, mazes and familiar learning spaces.

Students have also been developing their understanding of sequences and simple algorithms by following, giving and recording step-by-step instructions. They have used directions such as forward, backward, left and right to:

  • Move themselves or objects from one place to another
  • Guide a Bee-Bot to a chosen point on a grid
  • Solve simple movement problems by planning pathways
  • Test, refine and retry their steps when the Bee-Bot takes an unexpected turn

As their confidence has grown, many students have begun planning more complex routes, programming a series of steps and writing out the commands their Bee-Bot needs to follow to successfully reach a target location.

These engaging activities not only build early coding skills but also strengthen key mathematical understandings such as spatial reasoning, sequencing, directional language, and patterning.
