Let's change the way we think about...

A person has been forced to leave their home because of war.

A community is targeted by a government's military because of what they believe and literally run for their lives.

A tsunami literally wipes a town off the face of the earth making it unsafe for survivors to return.

All of these people are refugees; a word that has been tainted by politics and opinion over past decades. Jesus himself was a refugee - Matthew 2.13-14 records his family fleeing persecution from Herod and walking over 500kms on foot to Egypt.

The Good Shepherd community - school and church - exists because of refugees; German speaking Prussian refugees escaping religious persecution in the 1800s that settled in Adelaide, Klemzig, Hahndorf, Lobethal and the Barossa Valley.

The label "refugee" should carry with it respect, honour and compassion.

Some theologians think Jesus' experience as a refugee in a foreign country shaped his ministry to those in society doing it tough. Think about it the next time you hear the word.
