Terrific 2

Term 1 Week 4 2025 -  Friday 21st February

What have we been up to?

It has been a wonderful start to the school year so far! All of the students have come in with such a positive attitude, Well done! This week we have started our swimming program that runs for two weeks. Students will be going to the pool everyday to practice their swimming skills.

Leader in Me Lessons

Over the past two weeks, we focused our Leader in Me lessons on setting up and applying for leadership roles classroom and school wide. This helps students develop important leadership skills, and we’ve already seen great enthusiasm as each student now has a classroom leadership position, which encourages them to take responsibility and contribute positively to our classroom community. In addition, the students have completed an all about me activity to help us all get to know one another.

Science

We have begun our Science focus for this term, Chemical Sciences. During this topic students will be learning all about how objects are made of different materials that have observable properties and how everyday materials can be physically changed or combined with other materials in a variety of ways for particular purposes. Student completed a hands-on experiment that was making oobleck, oobleck is a mixture of cornstarch and water that behave like a solid or a liquid depending on how much pressure you apply. The kids loved this activity!

Specialist Programs and Classroom Lessons

This week, students have begun their specialist programs as well as our regular classroom lessons. We are diving into some exciting subjects, and we can’t wait to share all the wonderful things your child will learn and achieve.

In Literacy

We’ve been focusing on phonics, handwriting, and our author study of Nick Bland, particularly exploring the book The sleepy bear and The very itchy Bear. Students have been very proactive in their literacy learning.

Please remember that READERS ARE CHANGED EVERY MONDAY. Students will take 2 books each Monday, where they can alternate throughout the week. Please remember, students need to read these at least everyday MON-FRI as they are all in grade 2 now.

Readers will only be changed on a Monday. This may be repetitive for your child however that is the purpose. We are focusing on fluency and confidence.

In Maths

We’ve begun learning how to use place value charts up to the thousands. Students have also been working on using greater than and less than symbols when ordering numbers in the thousands. Students have been using whiteboards and manipulatives to support their understanding. We have also completed some Essential Assessment testing to gain a greater understanding of where each child is at after the school holidays.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your child’s progress.

Thank you for your support,

Kayla Mugford, Hannah Jackson & Sam Downs
