Level 2

Writing

This fortnight, our Level 2 students have started working on Procedural writing. They have explored different types of procedure texts such as recipes, directions and instructions, and identified the structure of these pieces, as well as learning the way that verbs, nouns and adverbs are used in giving steps in a method. They have started to write their own procedures, including giving someone directions to a specific location.

Reading

The Level 2 students are currently learning about the different types of connections they can make to texts. They have practised writing Text-to-Self connections to explain about how characters' thoughts and feelings from a story might be similar to their own, and relating to like experiences. They have also learned about Text-to-Text connections where they have found similarities between two texts, explaining how characters, settings and other features of a story might be alike.

Maths

In Week 3,  the Level 2 students explored Data by surveying their classmates to find out about their interests and other information. They practised collecting data as a tally and then creating graphs based on this. They created different types of graphs from data including data tables, column graphs and pie charts. They also interpreted information from different pieces of data to better understand how and why we collect data. In Week 4, we have learned about skip-counting by different patterns as a precursor to multiplication work. They have skip counted by groups of objects and identified counting patterns on hundreds charts, including the patterns of 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, odd numbers and more.

Inquiry

In the coming weeks, our students will continue our Inquiry unit about their own personal background and culture. They will be creating a timeline of their life. For this reason, we are asking if families can please provide a baby photo of your child that can be used in this project. You can either provide a printed photo to your child's classroom teacher, or email a digital version to them.

To support our timeline, the students will also be bringing home a survey next week to be discussed with a parent or other adult. We are asking for the dates of significant life events for your children, such as when siblings were born, when they started school/kinder, weddings, overseas holidays and anything else that may be of interest. Thank you for your support with these Inquiry tasks!

Homework

In Week 4, our students have started homework for the first time. Our homework tasks for Level 2 are quite simple and straightforward. Every week, students will bring home their spelling words. They will then select just one activity from the Spelling Grid of 9 activities and complete this in their homework book. Each week, they will choose a different activity from the grid. Homework will then be returned to school on Fridays to be sighted by a teacher. If homework cannot be completed during the week, teachers will provide time to complete it on Fridays at school during other end-of-week activities such as Friday Fun.

Students will also continue to complete their take-home reader books each night, with their reading to be recorded in their journal as they have in previous years. Students will change their reader books daily.
