Round the classes

This week we will hear from our specialist teachers:

Indonesian: Ibu Susan

In Indonesian the junior primary students have been busy reading a story that uses Siapa nama kamu? (What is your name?) as well as many animal names. They have been practising reading this story together and out loud. The students have also made jerapah tinggi (tall giraffes) from the story and sung a silly song all about names.

The year 2/3 and year 3/4 students have written sentences that use adjectives to describe those animals in the story. This uses the pattern noun then adjective. Some students have even remembered adjectives from last year to include in their writing. They have also been using the Victorian language learning site languagesonline to support their learning.

The year 4/5 and 5/6 students are learning how to give details about themselves and others including name, age, where they live (suburb) and what their favourite things are. It has been great learning all about  the students and for them to share this information with each other. The aim is for the students to be able to express these details confidently and automatically.  Sallie's class is also participating in a class competition this term to design the best ordinal numbers poster in Indonesian. They have had some fabulous ideas so far. The winner will be announced later in the term.

Science: Jess

Science News – Exploring Energy!

This term in science, students have been diving into the exciting world of energy! Our junior primary students have been investigating movement and forces by exploring different toys and equipment around the school that require pushing and pulling. They have enjoyed discovering how these forces impact movement in their everyday environment.

Meanwhile, our upper primary students have been learning about potential and kinetic energy, exploring how energy is stored and transferred in different situations. One of the highlights for all year levels was the opportunity to design and create their very own catapults using pop sticks and rubber bands. The students were thrilled to test them out and even more excited to bring them home to share with their families!

We were also fortunate to have a fantastic incursion with Peter Boggiano, who engaged students in a range of hands-on activities exploring energy. It was an incredible learning experience, and we hope to welcome Peter back later in the year for more fun and interactive science sessions.

Science has been full of energy – quite literally – and we can’t wait for more exciting learning opportunities ahead!

The Arts: Suzie

All classes have been busy preparing artworks to display and sell at the Uraidla Sustainability Fair held Sunday 16th March. Artworks include windchimes, representations of a sustainable and unsustainable Earth, friendship bands, hopes for the future and decorated old jars and cups. Students have enjoyed being collaborative, creative and working through the learning pit.

PE: Troy

In PE students have been active learning fundamental movement skills and game sense strategies.

Our three youngest classes have been focussing on the fundamental movement skills of leaping and underarm throwing. Over the past three weeks students have been explicitly taught how to leap and practised this through small games as well as circuit activites. We have also been learning how to accurately throw underarms and have practised through circuits as well as some of our Sports Day activities.

Our older classes have continued to play modified versions of touch football. They have learnt the skills of tagging, passing, roll ball and running with the ball to continually move it forward. This week classes have finished lessons with modified 2 vs 1 and 6 vs 6 games to apply the skills that have been taught.

Over the next four weeks, we begin our preparation for Sports Day with a big focus on the athletic events of high jump, long jump, and javelin as well as working on our tabloid events.

Gardening: Jo

Our local Sustainability Fair is just around the corner and so the focus in gardening groups this term is "Sustainability"!

Some of the questions we will look at in the year 4/5 class are:

  • What is sustainability?
  • Why do we collect green waste?
  • What are the sustainable practices we use at Uraidla Primary?

The students will participate in a "Sustainability Audit Race" and be introduced to the art of Kokedama- a Japenese form of garden art.  Keep an eye out for the students' creations around the school and at the Sustainability Fair.
