The Year 5 students have settled well into their new routines and being a part of the Senior School cohort. We have had a busy first few weeks, culminating today in their involvement in the Aspire Higher program. The students participated in lots of fun team-work activities whilst learning how to be effective leaders. A key message from our awesome presenters, Gil and Jamie, was that "Real leadership is about making the choice to BE KIND, BE HELPFUL and SET A GOOD EXAMPLE". Here are some photos from today's sessions:
Literacy: Introduction to Literature Circle roles
Writing: Introduction to the 6+1 writing traits
We had some wonderful descriptive writing paragraphs written that included 'Excellent Word Choice' and conversations between characters that developed our 'Voice' as an author.
Maths: (1) Developing strategies for addition and subtraction
(2) Selecting the appropriate unit of measure and methods of calculating area and perimeter. We practised this by getting outside and measuring the perimeter of different spaces around the school and using these measurements to determine the area.
Science: Introduction to space - categorising the planets in our Solar System.
Inquiry: Completing our unit on Leadership - 'Be the Change'. As of next week, we will be starting our Geography Unit - 'Where in the World?'
Well done to all the Year 5s who competed at this week's Swimming Trials. Some will now be moving on to complete in the District Swimming Carnival on Wednesday 19th February.
All students should have brought home a copy of their homework requirements for this fortnight. Please check in with your child to ensure they (a) understand the tasks and (b) have allocated appropriate time to complete their homework. This homework is due on FRIDAY 21st FEBRUARY. It includes 120 minutes of reading (this includes 20 minutes of reading aloud to practise pronunciation, fluency and expression), recorded in their diaries and signed by parents, Mathletics (4 tasks), and the preparation and practise of a Speaking & Listening task.
Enjoy your weekend!
