The Year 12 students recently embarked on a memorable retreat at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus in Geelong. They experienced a unique and enriching three-day stay in university student accommodation here. This retreat gave students a glimpse of what life could be like if they pursued university studies, offering a perfect blend of exploration, learning, and fun.
During their time at Deakin, the students were treated to a campus tour and an informative session about university life, providing them with valuable insights into what to expect if they choose this pathway after Year 12. They had some free time to explore Geelong, immersing themselves in the local atmosphere and community. A group of students were treated to a tour of the very impressive Thornton Engineering business, and others were lucky enough to watch the Hawthorn Football Club train both on the field and in the gym. It was wonderful to see many past students, particularly Sam Weston OC 2010, who enabled students to join the Hawks in the Gym for training.
A highlight of the retreat was an inspirational talk by ultra-marathon runner Paul Watkins. Paul shared his journey of dedication and perseverance, detailing the discipline required to complete an ultra-marathon. His message was clear: success comes from taking risks, developing discipline, and viewing challenges as learning opportunities rather than failures. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of pushing through obstacles and striving to be the best version of oneself.
The students also participated in various engaging workshops, including writing sessions aimed at refining their skills. To cap off the retreat, the students enjoyed a lively bush dance, which brought everyone together in a fun and interactive way.
Back at school, Year 12s have now started their Careers classes, where they’ve been focusing on making sure their resumes are up-to-date and relevant. We’ve also discussed the exciting possibilities of a GAP year and the steps involved in applying to universities. Over the coming term, students will be diving into research on various pathways for life after Year 12, intending to identify a range of exciting possibilities to explore as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
The Year 12 Retreat was a perfect mix of inspiration, practical advice, and hands-on learning, providing students with the tools and motivation to start making important decisions about their future.
We can’t wait to see where their journeys take them!
