Cranbourne Campus News

Day 1 - Ground Zero.

Friday saw the exciting induction of our new Year 7 students and some new students from other year levels, together with the return of our Year 8 to 12 students. It is fair to say that nerves were well afoot with many Year 7’s clinging to parents on the drop off while others, at a different stage of their development, ran away from pining parents, towards their new friends.

The morning’s focus revolved around that first hour spent with their Learning Advisor and their new tutor group classmates. This was a chance for students to begin to build their connections while setting up their lockers. From there the community came together for the Welcome Assembly highlighted by the procession and presentation of our newest members of St Peter's. Year 7’s then spent a further hour getting to know the run of the campus with their House Leader.

Following these initial three hours of transition, students moved into their normal classes with the students they are going to spend the next 12 months with.

The final cog in that transition happened on Thursday night when Year 7 and new families were invited in for our Welcome Evening and a chance to start making those connections with Learning Advisors and House Leaders.

The start of a new experience in a new community will often go through highs and lows but hopefully, our parents and carers come to realise that nerves are a healthy part of the change and also be confident that there will always be someone looking out for their young person as they ride these highs and lows.

Starting on the right foot

To provide clarity of what is expected right from the beginning, I took the opportunity at the Welcome Assembly to present a vision for the St Peter’s College schoolwide expectations - the ROCKS.

So what do I think Respect looks like at St Peter's?

  • Being on time to tutor group & each lesson
  • Responding to the reasonable instructions of teachers & not arguing, even if I do not agree
  • Waiting patiently for a teacher to help me rather than calling out across the room
  • Allowing teachers to teach and classmates to learn, without me distracting them

What does Organisation look like at St Peter's?

  • (Again) Being on time to tutor group & each lesson
  • Bringing the correct materials to class
  • Following our Lesson Routines
  • Attempting all homework tasks

What does Collaboration look like at St Peter's?

  • Working together with ALL teachers & classmates not just the ones I like
  • Clearly communicating with teachers if I am having trouble with the work or need help
  • Ensuring that my words and actions positively build people up and not put them down

What does Kindness look like at St Peter's?

  • It's in the positive & friendly tone I use when we speak to others
  • It's bringing people into my groups and activities rather than leaving them out
  • It's welcoming our new students and staff
  • It's letting my thoughts, words and actions show others I care

What does Safety look like at St Peter's?

  • Making sure my words and actions do not lead to someone going home feeling like they do not matter
  • Making sure my words and actions follow the example of Jesus and our House Patrons to include everyone - especially those who are different to us
  • Using the ROCKS to ensure everyone has a chance to enjoy St Peter's College - it's their school as much as mine!

The ROCKS of St Peter's are a solid foundation upon which all students can thrive in the year ahead.
