Welcome Back.
There was a tremendous amount of excitement on the first day of school this year from all year levels. The sunshine provided the perfect backdrop to celebrate the beginning of the new year with our welcome assembly, pastoral House sessions and even photo day.
Our community is special, and this was never more evident when watching the joyful interactions between families, students and teachers during the first few days of this term.
As the term unfolds, we can look forward to numerous activities, celebrations and extensive learning opportunities within and beyond the traditional classroom space. Already in a very short time the following events have successfully occurred including a Welcome Assembly, House Welcome and Pastoral sessions, Photo Day and the commencement of scheduled classes to consolidate the beginning of the formal school year.
As we begin a new school year, I highlight three important elements to support improved student learning confidence and outcome. ROCKS are well embedded in the language of all students, and we want to ensure that their understanding extends to actions within and beyond the classroom in all interactions with their peers and teachers. Classroom Routines have been well adopted by teachers and students and continue to be critical to ensuring every lesson builds student learning confidence which drives improvement in student learning outcomes. However, ROCKS and Classroom Routines will only foster improved learning confidence and outcomes if our students are present at school.
Therefore, as we start the term, let the focus be on ‘Everyday Counts’, attending school every day on time, with all the relevant learning materials and of course in correct uniform. Lateness to school and absence robs a student of learning opportunities. We know that some absences are unavoidable, and school refusal is a very difficult condition that some students face, we encourage families to seek support with this. Overall collectively we need to support a learning culture where school attendance everyday matters.
I offer you the following tips, taken from the Victorian Education Department that may be useful in building strong learning habit and culture of attending school every day.
Tips to help improve your child’s attendance
Talk to your child about school and how important it is. You can ask them how they feel about school, what they like and if there are any problems.
Encourage and celebrate good attendance habits with your child, including arriving to school on time every day.
Set a good example. Show them how you keep to your own commitments.
Encourage your child to take on hobbies that they enjoy such as sports and clubs. This will help them develop positive relationships outside of the classroom setting.
Help your child maintain daily routines such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
Help them pack their school bag the night before with everything they need.
Have a set time for breakfast.
Plan to meet up with a friend so they can travel to school together.
Please reach out to your son/daughter’s House Leader, Learning Advisor and or subject teachers should you need additional support or advice in relation to attendance, developing
I wish you all a safe and productive week.
