VCE CURRICULUM

Year 11 Overview

As the first full-time engagement with VCE, Year 11 sees the students grow in independence and self-management. For many of them, the opportunity to focus their subject choices on their own strengths and long-term plans creates an additional level of intentionality and investment in their learning. As staff, we see ourselves as working alongside students as they explore their sense of calling and goals. Faith development becomes more outward looking this year, as Christian Studies explores engagement in the broader community, considering the worldviews, ethics and diverse religious perspectives that may be encountered in the workplace, at University or TAFE, and in many other settings.

A core value here is Christians investing in meaningful engagement; engagement with our own faith; engagement with Christian community; engagement with the broader world. Our Community Days and Year 11 Camp provide opportunities for personal challenges, growth in students' relationship skills and their investment in faith conversations and practices. The year is not only about students' own growth, though. Year 11 is a significant opportunity for leadership within the life of the College, with many positions on the Student Leadership Team on offer to Year 11 students. Our captains are well-supported by many of their peers, as the VCE students organise, support, and guide the younger Secondary School students through house sports competitions, Creative Arts Week, community service and environmental care. At year's end, we see Year 11s looking forward to the opportunities and challenges of Year 12 and are aware and engaged in preparations to participate in life beyond school.

VCE units (apart from ‘Faith and Life’ in Year 11) consist of 3 x 75-minute classes per week.

Students in Year 11 will normally undertake six subjects plus Faith & Life. Please note Faith & Life is not a VCE subject. In addition to the Unit 1 & 2 course options, elective subjects may also include Units 3 & 4.

Year 12 Overview

The final year of schooling is filled with a range of different experiences designed to enrich the lives of our soon to be adults. Clearly one of the main focuses is on learning, assessment and scores that pave the way forward to future pathways beyond school. Our teachers will challenge you academically to learn new things, wrestle with deep questions and achieve to the best of your ability.

While one important purpose of finishing Year 12 studies is to determine the future pathway for our students; our scope at Donvale Christian College is broader than this. We hope that our students flourish academically, but we also desire that they contribute to, and feel blessed by, the vibrant and nurturing community of the College. Another key elementis the spiritual development of each person, and through formal and informal situations we desire our students to embrace this journey as well. To encourage these other aspects, we provide social events for the Year 12s to enhance the feeling of being part of the bigger group, and to allow the deepening of relationships.

Our hope is that each person who finishes Year 12 at Donvale Christian College be more aware of their own unique gifts, talents, and passions, as well as the calling of God on their lives to be part of the redemptive work of all of creation.
