Book Week Dress Up - Wednesday 20th August
9.00am Parade.
Classrooms Open until 11am for visits
This time next week we will all be looking fabulous in our book character costumes and celebrating our love of books. Children’s Book Week kicks off next week and we are pumped! Our special friends/grandparents will be feeling the excitement too!
Remember to invite them to the gym for our parade at 9:00am Wednesday the 20th August. Classrooms will then be open until 11am for a visit from Grandparents and Special People!
We also take this time to collect a book from each student to add to our library. This book can be one you’ve finished with (in good condition) or a new book that you think APS will thoroughly enjoy. A special dedication will be placed on the inside cover. These can be dropped to the front office or brought in on the day.
Our Premiers’ Reading Challenge is still underway and concludes in 24 days on the 5th of September. Everyone is still logging their reading and submitting some fabulous book reviews. Keep it up!
Here’s another snapshot of a CBCA Shortlisted book for 2025. Don’t Worry Felix By Yohann Devezy and Katharine Alice. Illustrated by Zoe Bennett.
If you’re struggling for costume ideas, this book character could be perfect.
Costume: A school student holding a red balloon. Bada-Bing! You’re done!
Don't Worry Felix is a beautifully illustrated and heart-warming picture book that helps young children navigate big feelings with empathy, resilience, and courage. Shortlisted for the 2025 CBCA Early Childhood category, this story has been recognised as one of Australia’s finest contributions to children’s literature. The book follows Felix, a lovable character who learns how to face worries with support from those around him. Through gentle storytelling and expressive visuals, children are introduced to strategies for managing emotions, fostering confidence and emotional literacy from an early age. Don't Worry Felix encourages meaningful conversations between children and adults. It supports the development of oral language, vocabulary, and comprehension while nurturing social and emotional growth. This is a lovely story for children that might feel worried about coming to school. Felix remembers some special tricks to make him feel safe.
We have a few copies of this story in our school library ready to be borrowed and loved.
This is another reminder about our performance happening on the 29th August. Meerkat Productions are presenting Freya Blackwood’s book A Garden of Broken Things for our prep-year 4 students.
The Garden of Broken Things is a masterfully composed, metaphorical tale that helps children understand both the value of the old and the young. It is told age-appropriately in tender words and watercolour, pencil and pastel.
Freya Blackwood is one of our most accomplished and highly regarded picture book creators. Two of her books are shortlisted in the 2025 CBCA Picture Book of the Year category: The Garden of Broken Things, and Afloat, illustrated by Freya Blackwood, with text by Kirli Saunders. Our library has many copies of these books available for borrowing.
Below is a glorious reading of ‘Don’t Worry Felix’ read by Mrs B. It’s fun to watch these book readings when you can’t borrow the book.
Enjoy!
