Citizenship in Humanities

by Ms Sharyn Leahy Hatton, Humanities Domain Leader

In semester one, the Geography students were involved in a significant  research project to investigate citizenship, belonging and cohesion in the City of Melbourne (Naarm). This project provided students in 9A-9F an opportunity to experience life beyond the classroom as they conducted research during an overnight City Camp in Naarm and presented their findings to the school community in an evening presentation.

The intention of this project is for students to work in a small team, ask questions about the city they live in, and bring this information back into the classroom to communicate a story on the voices that make up a society.  In learning from the past and observing the city today, students can build valuable knowledge about themselves and the many perspectives of others living in Melbourne.

At night we experienced the city from the Melbourne Skydeck, nearly 300 metres high and had dinner in one of the many food venues. The growth and independence teachers saw in students was incredible. We would also like to thank the many parents who braved the rainy night to support the presentation evening and hear the many unique stories told from the perspective of each team of students.

Thank you to the team of teachers who brought this project to life in their classes: Ms Frackowski, Ms Leahy Hatton and Ms Lin.
