Celebrating excellent NAPLAN results

by Mr Greg Breese, Assistant Principal

NAPLAN results were released at the start of Term 3 and BHHS is again celebrating the excellent achievements of our students. The results reflect the learning occurring in our classrooms, the result of intentional and dedicated work by our students and teachers.

Results for the assessments are reported as one of four bands: Needs additional support, Developing, Strong, and Exceeding. Students who achieve an Exceeding result have surpassed the expectations at the time of testing. We are proud this year of our Year 9 Writing results, with 44% of our students achieving an Exceeding result.

Writing has been a key improvement focus for the school over the last three years. This work began with our English teachers and in 2024 became a whole school focus. Teachers have been upskilled in how to teach students to become more sophisticated writers and have been including more writing tasks in students’ learning activities. Strategies from “The Writing Revolution” by Judith Hochman have been an important influence on the school’s thinking. It is exciting to see this working having a measurable impact on students’ writing skills.

Results in Year 9 were also strong in Reading and Numeracy, with the proportion of students achieving an Exceeding result also exceeding that seen in similar schools and schools in our network.

Our Year 7 students have also achieved outstanding NAPLAN results this year, a credit to the primary schools in our local area.

The high academic achievement of our junior students is supported by a wide range of enrichment programs for students in Years 7 to 9. These include reading, writing and mathematics programs, such as maths games days, visiting authors and the Victorian High Abilities Program.
