Term 3 is flying by!

by Ms Kellie Ind, Principal

Dear School Community,

This year, Term 3 is a time to reflect and celebrate the wonderful history and successes of Box Hill High School – as an important part of the Box Hill community and as a proud and high performing government school!

We hope that you will support our students getting involved in our 1930s School Day dress-up day on Thursday 4 September, and that parents and carers can attend the Jazz Night on Thursday 18 September to support the fundraiser for our music department.

This term we have many other events running that showcase all the different activities and opportunities we organise to make school an engaging place to come along to every day – one-on-one course advising sessions, the Year 9 Alpine School, the annual school talent show heats and final run at lunchtimes over two weeks, five long days of  ‘Write a book in a day’ with over 300 students involved, the VCE VM “Big Freeze” fundraiser (I will be participating!), the All Ensembles ‘Spring’ Concert, the Royal South Street Eisteddfod and VSMF concert band competitions, Division Athletics, interschool sport, Maths Games Day, Year 8 RAISE Mentoring, the Year 11 Geography Camp, and many other incursions and excursions!

Well done to some of our wonderful students who have achieved great things this semester!

Our cross country star

Congratulations to Sienna in Year 9 who was awarded the State Champion for coming First in the Under 14 girls at the Victorian Cross Country finals in July. This is a first for the school and we are so happy for her! Outstanding result!

Geography winners

Another remarkable achievement was the results in the 2025 Australian Geography Competition where a number of students achieved in the top 1% and 10% of the state. A huge congratulations to Angelina (Year 9) who achieved the impressive result of being awarded First in Victoria in the competition!

See the item later for all the other excellent results for the school this year – well done to all those students who participated.

Puzzle queens

The Box Hill High School team also came first in the Victorian Jigsaw Puzzle Championship!!

Great work Milly F (Y11), Gemma S (Y11), Chloe K (Y7), and Victoria S (Y7).

The 2025 NAPLAN results

We have achieved our best overall student results in NAPLAN this year, in particular in Writing.

In Year 7, 89% of students achieved results in the top 2 bands in Reading (compared to 84% in similar schools and 66% in the state),  88% in Writing (compared to 80% in similar schools and 62% in the state), and 94% in Numeracy (compared to 87% in similar schools and 66% in the state). This is largely due to the wonderful work done in our local primary schools who prepare the student well for high school, and all our parents/carers who support their children’s learning. A very low number of students require additional support across the literacy and numeracy measures.

In Year 9, 85% of students achieved in the top two bands in Reading (compared to 81% in similar schools and 63% in the state), 84% of students were in the top two bands in Writing (compared to 79% in similar schools and 61% in the state), and 90% of students achieved in the top two bands in Numeracy (compared to 83% in similar schools and 62% in the state).

In Writing, 85% of our Year 9 students experienced High Growth since Year 7 – outstanding effort! This significant improvement in writing is a result of our whole-school focus on improving student writing over the last 2-3 years and I want to commend teachers on their commitment to implementing sentence-level strategies in their classrooms. Together we have made a positive impact on student learning (and life) outcomes!

Celebrating 95 years

Parents and carers – we would love to see you at our Jazz Night on Thursday 18 September! It will be a lovely school community night in the school hall with many talented acts. BYO drinks and food, tickets on sale now and all monies will be donated to our music department to buy equipment.

Parent Opinion Survey

Please keep your eyes out for the 2025 Parent/Caregiver/Guardian Opinion Survey which opens next week and closes on the 19 September. We value your feedback!
