Exploring Engineering and Design in Year 7 Systems Technologies 

In Year 7 Systems Technologies, students step into the world of systems thinking, design, and engineering. Through hands-on projects and creative challenges, students explore how everyday machines and structures work—learning to think like real-world problem solvers.

Students apply their understanding of these machines in a major design project: building a Rube Goldberg machine using simple materials such as cardboard, string and masking tape. These elaborate chain-reaction machines perform a simple task in a complex and entertaining way, encouraging students to think critically and creatively while collaborating with their peers. 

Later in the course, students shift their attention from moving parts to structural stability. They learn about engineering principles related to structures and tackle the challenge of designing and building a model earthquake-resistant building using matchsticks and play-dough. This activity not only reinforces design and testing skills but also encourages an appreciation for how engineering contributes to real-world safety and innovation. 

Throughout the subject, students engage with the Double Diamond Design Process, which supports them in discovering, defining, developing, and delivering solutions. This structured approach helps them learn how to approach problems methodically, test their ideas, and improve their designs based on feedback.
