The Power of Resilience and Putting Yourself Out There

In life, we are often told to “be brave”. But what does bravery really look like in our everyday lives? It is not always about grand gestures or heroic acts. Sometimes, bravery is simply about showing up, trying something new and putting yourself out there—even when the outcome is uncertain.

Whether it is auditioning for a play, applying for a leadership role, entering a competition or speaking up in class, these moments require courage. And here is the truth: you will not always get the result you hoped for. But that is okay. Because resilience, the ability to bounce back, reflect, and grow, is where the real magic happens.

Why Taking Risks Matters

Every time you step outside your comfort zone, you are giving yourself a chance to learn. You are saying, “I am willing to try, even if I fail.” That mindset is powerful. It builds confidence, character, and emotional strength. It teaches you how to handle disappointment with grace and how to turn setbacks into stepping stones.

Reflect, Don’t Retreat

When things do not go your way, it is easy to feel discouraged. But instead of retreating, take a moment to reflect:

  • What did I learn from this experience?
  • What could I do differently next time?
  • What strengths did I discover in myself?

This kind of reflection helps you grow—not just as a student, but as a person. It is how you turn a “no” into a “not yet.”

Growth Over Perfection

Resilience is not about being perfect. It’s about being persistent. It’s about showing up again and again, even when it is hard. And every time you do, you are finding your brave. You are proving to yourself that you are capable of more than you thought.

So, the next time an opportunity comes your way, take it. Say yes! Put yourself out there. Because whether you succeed or stumble, you are building something far more important than a perfect record – you are building you.

So, in the words of my favourite Disney Princess: “Jings, crivens, help ma boab!” *Oops - wrong quote! I meant the other one:“Our fate lives within us. You only have to be brave enough to see it.” Be brave, no matter what.

*A Scottish phrase to express exasperation, frustration and/or amazement .
