Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,

Wow! Can you believe we are already just a few weeks away from the end of term.Time has really flown by! Our students have been working hard on their Exhibition projects and showed great enthusiasm during Book Week. The past few weeks have been filled with exciting learning opportunities, special events, and activities that continue to enrich our school community. Each day brings new chances for growth, creativity, and connection.

Literacy

This year’s theme, “Book an Adventure,” encouraged our students to embark on exciting literary journeys, discovering new worlds, ideas, and characters along the way. Through shared reading, storytelling, and creative writing, they experienced how books can open doors to endless possibilities. Book Week inspired curiosity and imagination while deepening students’ appreciation for the power of stories to connect, inspire, and challenge us in meaningful ways.

One of the highlights of the week was exploring Text Innovation. Students selected mentor texts and used them as inspiration to craft their own imaginative stories, complete with illustrations. This process allowed them to reimagine familiar tales in their own unique voices, and the pride they took in their creations was evident. Book Week was truly a celebration of adventure, creativity, and the joy that reading brings into our lives.

Numeracy

In Maths, our focus has been on Fractions, particularly dividing fractions. Students have been developing strategies to explain their reasoning clearly and apply problem-solving skills in real-world contexts. This emphasis on mathematical thinking has helped build both confidence and deeper understanding.

Inquiry

Currently, students have been working on their research boards, carefully mapping out their ideas and evidence to support their inquiries. It has been fantastic to see them reaching out to their mentor teachers for guidance and feedback. Their dedication, collaboration, and curiosity are evident in every step of the process. We look forward to celebrate their hard work and creativity at the Exhibition Showcase later next term.

Book Week Parade

Grades 5 and 6 came together at the basketball court to celebrate Book Week, where students showcased their favourite characters through creative costumes.

Student Voice - Reflection

Recently, everyone came together to dress up as their favourite characters from books! From Oompa Loompas to Alvin and The Chipmunks, everyone was having a blast as their characters. Even the teachers joined in! There was a whole parade at the basketball courts, where everyone marched and gave high fives to people in the crowd, there was dinosaurs, spidermen, aliens and more!

Go Girl, Go for IT! Excursion

Last Wednesday, our Year Six girls had the opportunity to attend the Go Girl, Go for IT excursion at Deakin University.

They explored the many exciting career pathways in technology and met inspiring women who are shaping the future of tech. Workshops included “What’s Your Tech Superpower?”, where students discovered the wide range of roles available in the technology industry—from digital engineering to AI development. One highlight was experimenting with a website that allowed them to design their own apps using AI. With just a simple description, the program generated a fully functioning app—complete with editable widgets, chatbots, trackers, and more. The girls left the event excited, realising that in technology, the only limit is your imagination!

The Ranch Camp

Our Year Six students recently attended The Ranch Camp, located in the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, where they were graced with glorious weather for their three-day adventure. Each day was action-packed, filled with exciting challenges and opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Students showed resilience and risk-taking as they rotated through a variety of activities, including mountain boarding, flying fox, bush cooking, archery, sports courts, the giant swing, and rock climbing. While some activities seemed daunting at first, we were incredibly impressed by the way students faced their fears, encouraged one another, and embraced each challenge—many discovering the rewards of persistence and courage.

School Based Camp

Students had the opportunity to participate in a school-based camp where they explored and enjoyed a variety of activities throughout the week. They took part in several challenges that required them to use their critical and creative thinking skills. One highlight was the Marshmallow and Spaghetti Tower Challenge, where their task was to build the tallest tower possible within 20 minutes that could successfully support a marshmallow on top.
