Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

Wow! It's incredible that we're already over halfway through Term Three! We’re already racing through the weeks, and it feels like each one is fuller than the last! Our school community is alive with learning, laughter, and growth. From the classroom to the playground, every day brings new opportunities to try something different, celebrate achievements, and make lasting memories together.

Literacy

In Literacy, Year 5 Students explored texts that connect to identity, belonging, and storytelling. From 'Always Was, Always Will Be' to 'South With the Seabirds' and 'A Leaf Called Greaf', they reflected on themes of Country, healing, family, migration, and community. With the text 'The Journey', Students practised making inferences using both words and illustrations, while also developing persuasive skills through editorial writing. Quick Writes encouraged creativity, descriptive language, and experimenting with different writing styles.

Unit of Inquiry

Our central idea, “Migration may be a response to challenges and opportunities,” has guided our inquiry under 'Where we are in place and time'. Students have compared migration stories across time, noticing similarities and differences while exploring how migration continues to shape people’s lives. They have also reflected on how migration connects to culture, identity, and community, sharing their understanding in a range of creative formats.

Mathematics

In Maths, Students have been strengthening their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages through number lines. They began by partitioning lines into equal parts, accurately placing unit and non-unit fractions, and explaining their reasoning. Building on this, they explored how fractions and decimals represent the same point, practising simple conversions such as ½ = 0.5 and ¼ = 0.25. Students then extended this knowledge by using patterns to predict and place values efficiently and creating their own accurate number lines to challenge their peers. Practical activities have supported Students in building a deeper and more flexible understanding of these important concepts.
