Year Two

Students in Year Two have had a wonderful term of learning so far.
Reading:
In Reading this fortnight, students have been exploring visual literacy through the text 'Where the Forest Meets the Sea' by Jeannie Baker. Students identified the geographical features shown in the text and matched these with adjectives, linking to our grammar focus for the week.
Students also enjoyed 'Ella and the Ocean', written by Lian Tanner, and discussed the rich descriptive language used to capture different environments. These texts connect closely to our Unit of Inquiry under the Central Idea “Places on Earth have different features that affect how people care for them.”
Students have also been exploring non-fiction texts in reading and learning about homes around the world. Students have learnt how different landforms and environments can shape the way people live their lives.
Writing:
In Writing, students have celebrated Book Week through creating a text innovation. Each class selected a familiar text and reimagined it by changing characters, settings, or events to make the story their own. This process encouraged students to apply their understanding of the narrative structure while experimenting with creative ideas.
As part of this work, students focused on using descriptive language, particularly adjectives, to build vivid images for their readers. They also practised revising and editing their work by checking punctuation and spelling.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students continued exploring the connection between multiplication and division. They practised using strategies such as halving and repeated subtraction to solve problems.
Students also applied these strategies to word problems, showing how their understanding of multiplication and division can be used in real-life situations.
Inquiry:
In our Unit of Inquiry, students have been exploring different geographical features and how these shape environments and the way people live. They investigated elements such as water resources, farmland, food sources, and animals, as well as edible vegetation.
Students also discussed natural resources that could be used to make tools, making links to how First Nations people have traditionally cared for and lived in connection with the land.
Year 2 students also explored different landscapes and matched them with houses that would be most suitable for each landform. They considered the environmental characteristics that make a place fit for living and explained why their chosen house was the best option for that landform.
Book Week:
Book Week was such a fun celebration in Year 2! Students loved dressing up as their favourite book characters and sharing the stories that inspire them. We enjoyed listening to and reading a range of books, sparking lots of conversations about characters, settings, and the magic of storytelling. The highlight was our Year Two parade, where the creativity and excitement really shone through.
