Year One

Dear Year One Families,

It has been a busy and exciting time in Year One, filled with lots of learning and new experiences.

Reading

In Reading, students have been immersed in a range of exciting Book Week activities. They have enjoyed listening to read alouds, sharing book reviews, and retelling stories. In class, students have also been working on a text innovation where they used their creativity to change parts of a story and make it their own. These activities have sparked rich discussions and helped deepen their understanding of story structure and language.

Writing

In Writing, students have continued their text innovation by moving through the stages of the writing process. They began by brainstorming ideas in their writer’s notebooks, then drafted their own versions of familiar stories with creative twists. After drafting, students worked on editing their writing, focusing on punctuation, spelling, and adding detail to improve their stories. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they develop their writing skills and bring their ideas to life.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the concept of sharing equally. The children have been using concrete materials such as counters and blocks to model equal groups and show their understanding. We also read the mentor text The Doorbell Rang, which supported our learning and sparked great discussions about fairness and equal sharing. This hands-on approach is helping students build a strong foundation in early division concepts through practical experiences.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been designing and constructing their own toys that combine features from both the past and present. This hands-on project has been a fantastic way for them to showcase what they’ve learned about how toys have changed over time. We’ve been so impressed with their creativity, thoughtful designs, and their growing knowledge of materials used in the past and present.

Book Week

Book Week was a wonderful celebration in Year 1! Students were so excited to dress up as their favourite book characters and share stories they love. We explored a variety of books together, which led to some great discussions about characters, settings, and what makes a story special. A favourite moment was the Year One parade, full of colour, imagination, and lots of smiling faces!

Swimming

Well done to Group 1 (classes 1A, 1B, 1E, 1F, 1J & 1K) for concluding the Swimming program. The students have thoroughly enjoyed their lessons and should be proud of the way they have represented our school.
