Library News

What a dynamic fortnight in the Brigidine and Kildare libraries! From adventuring through books to hearing firsthand from a modern-day explorer, we've been on a journey of curiosity, courage and connection. And there is plenty more to come!
Book Week 2025 – "Book an Adventure"
This year’s Book Week theme - "Book an Adventure" - captured our imaginations and reminded us that reading can take us anywhere: to distant galaxies, ancient worlds, or the depths of the human spirit.
To celebrate, the library hosted a very special guest…….
🎥 Special Guest: Eric Phillips & the SpaceX Polar Orbit
Last week we were incredibly privileged to host a live video call with Eric Phillips, renowned adventurer, polar explorer, and most recently, a crew member for a SpaceX polar orbit mission.
Eric shared stories of resilience, courage, and determination from his expeditions across some of the harshest environments on Earth. Eric shared breathtaking insights (and photographs) into preparing for space travel from a polar perspective, discussing how his background in Arctic and Antarctic expeditions shaped his preparation for the SpaceX mission. He spoke passionately about:
- The parallels between polar survival and space exploration
- The various stages of the launch and what happens to the space craft as it enters space and returns again
- How technology, resilience, and environmental awareness play vital roles
The importance of research and learning—including reading—in pushing boundaries
Eric answered a number of questions from students and described what it felt like to be in microgravity. His story was the ultimate real-life adventure and a powerful reminder that learning can launch you into entirely new worlds.
His message?
“Great adventures begin with curiosity and preparation.”
A big thank you to Eric for taking the time to speak with our students and ignite their sense of adventure and self-belief, and to Mr Cohn for organising it!
HPE Week and an Atmospheric Physicist
This week we turned our focus to health, fitness and wellbeing as we celebrated HPE Week. It may have been a shortened week, but we have plenty of information on body systems, elite performance, and brain science.
On Monday we also welcomed world-acclaimed atmospheric physicist Dr Scott Chambers to St Joseph’s to address some of our senior students. Mrs Philips has provided an overview of Dr Chambers’ wonderful presentation in this edition of the newsletter.
We hope you had a great day at the athletics carnival and supported your House well! Let’s carry that energy beyond HPE Week and keep chasing knowledge, health, and adventure - wherever it takes us! Dr Chambers certainly demonstrated the endless opportunities that are available for those who seek them.
Thursday and Friday this week are pupil-free days (Staff Professional Development). We trust you use the time wisely – whether to catch up on reading, revise for upcoming assessments, or take care of your wellbeing.
