Mr Derek Lennon
After another wet week last week it was great to see the sun out on Saturday as Marist hosted St Laurence’s College in all three sports. Lauries are our traditional rival, and it certainly was no different on Saturday with many tightly contested matches across tennis, rugby league and basketball.
Overall, we had a strong day with rugby league winning 9, drawing 3 and losing 2 and the 1sts winning 24-18, tennis we won 11 ties and lost 5, with the 1sts losing 6-2 and in basketball we had 15 wins and 17 losses, with the firsts losing 76-51.
This weekend we face St Edmunds College with the senior teams away in Ipswich. There will be some supplementary matches this weekend so please check the draw carefully.
One of the great things about sport is it challenges us. It challenges us physically, mentally, socially, it tests our character and our resilience. The reason it challenges us is because it means so much to us. Many of you young men will be talking about your sporting highlights at school at reunions and gatherings for the rest of your lives. This is a great thing, that passion builds community, it gives us the opportunity to grow as young men and it challenges us, especially when things do not go so well.
When I think about the life lessons sport provides us and the challenges our young men deal with when representing the college is sport, I come back to the Marist values of humility, simplicity and modesty. I am well aware that is challenging dealing with the pressure of expectation: to earn a spot in the team, to do well personally, the desire to win, working with coaches, working with officials. Every time we play sport it is a learning opportunity, a chance to be better than we were before. That is not just performing, it is also in our resilience, our discipline and our respect. For me, those three small words should be in the forefront of our minds as we play each week: humility, simplicity and modesty. If we get that right, we go a long way to playing the game the right way and representing the College in way we can all be proud of.
Baseball - Lachlan Pawsey (Australia Under 16)
Lachlan Pawsey, Year 11I, was selected to represent the U16 Australian Baseball team after his performance at the Australian Youth Championships in January. Spending August 3-13th in Japan, Lachlan’s team of 16 players from across the nation stayed in Fuchu to play daily against some of the top Japanese junior teams. With 38 degree days and extreme humidity, it was definitely challenging, but the boys thrived, For Lachlan, this included his first home run in the notorious Tokyo Giants stadium as well as taking home the team's MVP award. Well done Lachlan on this truly significant achievement. We wish you well on your baseball journey.
Hockey - Matthew Alvarez (Queensland Under 15)
Earlier this month, Matthew Alvarez Yr 10E competed at the 2025 School Sport Australia Hockey Championship Under 15s in Canberra representing Queensland. Seven teams from all States and the ACT took part in the tournament during seven days of competition. The Queensland Team won the Gold Medal, defeating New South Wales 2-1 in the final. Matthew scored a total of six goals during the seven games of the tournament, including both of the goals in the final, with the winning goal being scored less than 60 seconds before the end of the game.
Cross Country
National Cross Country Championships were held in Ballarat last Saturday.
Harry Prole ran an incredible race to finish 4th in Australia in the U17 boys 6km in 19:17 on a tough muddy course in the cold. He led for much of the race and only just dropped off the lead pack in the closing 300 metres.
Archer Tallon made his debut for Queensland in the same U17 race and came home midfield in 55th in 22:07, running home strong.
Xavier Hunter made light of a calf strain to battle on for 53rd and midfield in the U16 boys 4km in 14:42.
A great representation for Marist - the boys did themselves and the College proud.
Basketball - Samantha Davids - Basketball Coordinator
Round 4 brought our basketballers back home to match up against the black and yellow, St Laurence’s College. Our year 6’s started the weekend off well with 3 out of our 4 teams coming away with wins. Saturday was filled with a mixed bag of results, some solid wins like the 7A’s 73-23 and 8A’s 47-36. While some of our aggregate’s games were nail biting, edge of your seat games with wins by 1 or 2. Another successful weekend neither the less with our teams coming together to improve on their defensive techniques. Well done to all the players, and coaches and our supporters in the hive. This week we go on a road trip to St Edmonds College in Ipswich.
1st V Report - Jacob Cook - 1st V Captain
Final Score: Marist 51 – St Laurence’s 77
On Saturday we faced off against St Laurence’s in what was a tough matchup. Despite the challenges, including some tough calls from the referees and the pressure of Laurie’s relentless full-court press, we kept our heads high and continued to battle throughout the game. Their defence tested our abilities, but we showed resilience and composure under pressure.
Although the final score didn’t go our way, there were plenty of positives to take away. Our offensive and defensive runs throughout the game highlighted our growth and the potential we’re building on each week. We are improving every game, and the way we stuck together and kept competing until the end shows the character of this group.
With three games left in the season, we’re determined to keep working hard and finish strong.
1st V Report - James Lymer - 1st V Coach
At the halfway point of the AIC season, the 1st V team looked to hit the reset button after the Ekka break and make the necessary adjustments at home. Lauries got out to a strong start inside, putting two of our starters in foul trouble early. Trailing by 10 in the 1st Quarter, greater emphasis on the defensive end was the message. We were much smarter with our principles, collapsing the paint and forcing more contested jumpshots, limiting their efficiency in the 2nd. With our shots not dropping and offense being stagnant at times, momentum looked to shift in the 3rd. After picking up the intensity and turning great defence into easier offense, the margin was brought back to 6 points. A number of ill-disciplined decisions on the court changed the game moving forward, taking the wind out of our sails and struggling to regain the momentum.
Although a disappointing finish to what was another winnable game, some important lessons were learnt through staying poised as a group during all moments of the game. We keep moving forward and continue to get better, as we travel to Ipswich vs St Eddies on the weekend.
7C v SLC Report - Dakota Willmot - 7C Coach
The 7C boys fought hard. With all of the challenges going against our team, they played right till the very end and unfortunately lost in the last 30 seconds of the game. First loss of the season and hopefully the last. Very proud of this bunch.
Mr Lachlan Gough - Rugby League Coordinator
Our first full round of rugby league at home with the 1st XIII playing on McMahon for the season saw us get back on track. It was great to see the blue and gold jerseys out in full force across the fields.
The 1sts had a good win (24-18). After a strong start, getting to a 12-0 lead, we fell asleep for a 20-minute period either side of half time to let Lauries take the lead before a late resurgence reasserted our dominance to secure our first win of the season. Well done the boys and coaches Mr Winchester, Mr Grealy and Mr Taylor.
We had a strong day overall with 9 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses. The secondary team of the day was the 10Bs, coached by Dean Collins, who won 74-0 and the primary team of the day was the 5Bs, coached by Old Boys Pat Jewell and Adam Burnell, who won 32-4.
Rugby league is a tough game. It requires players who are mentally and physically strong, with good aerobic endurance and a team first mentality. Players need to be disciplined and work hard, and to be aggressive, but in a controlled manner. Well done to all the boys and coaches who represent the College each week.
This weekend we travel to Ipswich to take on St Edmund’s College. Check the draw for supplementary matches at Iona, Villanova and St Laurences.
Ms Kathryn Badini - Hockey Coordinator
The Hockey team had their last fixture game against Mt Maria College on Tuesday afternoon down at Burringbar Park. Having already secured our spot in the Grand Final, this was an important game for us to continue to combine as a team and enact the style of play that we will need against St Edmund’s. The final result was 5 – nil with two goals coming apiece from Matt Alvarez and Luke Keir, and the fifth from Max James in his debut season.
The Grand Final is this Friday against St Edmund’s College at the State Hockey Centre. The start time is 4:15. We are hoping to have a big crowd there to give us that extra motivation when we need it. Any student wanting to come can email Ms Kathryn Badini –badinik@marash.qld.edu.au – the secure their spot on the bus.
