Book Week Celebrations

Our annual Book Week celebrations with a book fair, costume parade and group activities certainly made for a fun week, last week, at school.  On Wednesday and Friday, Nicole and Megan hosted the book fair where families could see the Scholastic Book Club catalogue come to life on the shelves.  We would like to extend our gratitude to our community; each sale has raised points for our school to spend on new books and mentor texts for our library.  As part of hosting a book fair, we have been gifted 10 new books to the value of $150.  On top of this, we have received a further $330 to spend on books from Scholastic.

PARADE

On Friday our students, families, and staff thoroughly enjoyed our infamous annual Book Parade, a chance to show off tremendous costumes from our favorite books or characters,  to our community.

Children's Book Week themed activities - Book An Adventure

After our parade, students broke into 3 different groups for rotation with 3 different activities set up by our staff.  Each themed activity was based on a book.

Book 1
Book 1

The Truck Cat is a story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found.

Together students watched and followed a short guided art project by Ellen, creating their own Truck Cat. What color(s), what size; kitten/adult, what type of eyes, does this bring out their personality, where have they been or where are they going?  Many questions and lots of chatting amongst each other.

Our very own writer in residence, Angela Toniolo, with her published book, Mavis: The little plane spotter.  Ange, as we fondly know her, read to each group her first published children's storybook.

"Mavis is a feisty ten-year-old who lives in rural Australia with her mum, dad and sister, Doreen. It’s World War Two, and Darwin is bombed. Life as she knows it changes. Her dad and Uncle John dig a trench in the backyard, and school lessons are replaced with air raid drills. Mavis is keen to help the war effort at home, and an opportunity arises when a soldier comes to school seeking volunteers. Too young to help on her own, she convinces her older sister, Doreen, to join her in plane spotting."

Book 2
Book 2

"One day, Sadie follows a cat into the scrub behind Number 9 Ardent Street, where tangled vines concealed things from another time … things that had come to a final halt. Deep in the undergrowth, she finds the cat sitting on the lap of a woman, bent with time and weariness. In this garden of broken things, Sadie shares the minutiae of daily life, her reportage stirring deep memories and love within the woman, sparking a heart warming transformation."

Choose something broken or old

Make it new ; a new use ; new ideas ; reuse/repurpose

What's old is new and can have a new life.

Students through drawing, cut and paste and discussion came up with this you could turn into something else and talked about how it could be used and enjoyed.

Book 3
Book 3

"We live in a bus. She’s called Gracie Joy Rufus Bean (we couldn’t agree on a name).Gracie Joy Rufus Bean has six wheels and a door that opens when you push a button, tic-shhh!

Life is full of surprises when you live in a bus. Everywhere is your home and every day brings something new. Join one family as they enjoy life on the road – camping under the stars, listening to nature, and making new friends along the way."

Our students paired up and went on an adventure around the school with their running sheet full of riddle's finding the answers.
