Learning Across the ELC

Learning in the Gumnut Room

The Gumnut Atelier space is forever evolving and growing as we add new and different provocations, reflecting on the children’s ideas and how they interact in the area. The mediums we introduced to the space this week were coloured cellophane, mirrors, and a light table, with loose parts and natural materials as well as lead pencils. Children showed such inquisitiveness as they approached the environment, investigating different ways to manipulate and work with the unique textures. They each brought new ideas as we observed children engaging in symbolic play, where they pretended the cellophane was a sponge and they began cleaning the windows with it. Other observations noticed included placing various colours and textured paper over the light table and seeing the effects they created and also using their prior learning to explore by scrunching the paper and holding the paper up to their faces.

We have noticed some children moving from parallel play to associative play where they are interacting more with each other and sharing ideas.
