FLUENCY GAME – GUESS MY NUMBER?
This week the 1 / 2 students have been playing ‘Guess My Number?’
This Guess My Number Game is an excellent resource to help your child think about numbers and their properties.
The game is very simple and a lot of fun! Show the child a grid of different numbers while thinking of a number in your head. From there, it’s the child’s job to eliminate numbers to find the correct answer. They can do this by asking you questions that have a yes or no response. Some useful question prompts are listed below.
As the child asks more questions, they will eliminate more numbers. Eventually, only a single number will be left: the one that your child is trying to find. This is a great way to help children consider the different properties of numbers, as they’ll need to consider these carefully to determine the number that you’re thinking of!
Be sure that you don’t let the children guess! It’s important that they use their maths and reasoning skills to discover the answer, rather than stumbling on it out of luck.
QUESTION PROMPTS:
Is it a 1-digit number? Is it a 2-digit number? Is it an even number? Is it an odd number?
Do I say it when I count by 2’s? Do I say it when I count by 5’s? Do I say it when I count by 10’s?
Is it greater than __? Is it less than __? Is it between ___ and ___?
Is there 3 in the tens place? Is there a 6 in the tens place? etc
