Principal's Report

In no time at all we find ourselves in the second half of the term.  When I look at our calendar and see the amount of events we have had in the first half of the term, the events we have coming up and the events in planning, no wonder the weeks are flying by.

Some of you will have noticed that we are working hard in segregating our waste at Windsor. Classrooms and the outdoor areas have bins for food waste, recycling and rubbish.  Our aim is to have as little rubbish as possible.  Unfortunately, our rubbish increased significantly when the supermarkets stopped collecting used soft plastics – we are looking forward to a solution to this in the future as food packaging is the biggest contributor to rubbish.

The most concerning thing from our point of view is the amount food waste we are throwing out. The good news is we have our own composting program that our food waste goes to, however it is designed for apple cores and peels – the parts of organics that we don’t eat.  Currently we are composting whole sandwiches (sometimes still wrapped), half eaten packs of chips and whole pieces of fruit.

To help us manage the amount of food waste we are experiencing, please implement some initiatives such as asking your children to always put any unfinished food back into their lunchboxes so it can be eaten later and cutting larger food items into smaller pieces. This method also gives parents an indication of what and how much is being eaten at school and if any adjustments are required.  Hopefully this will not only help our food waste situation it could also save families some money.
