From the Principal

On Monday 28th August, we gathered as a community to commemorate the feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo. I would like to share with you how the life and teachings of St Augustine’s align with the core values of St Augustine’s College.

Community: Augustine's life was shaped by his interactions with others. Born in the year 354 in North Africa, he navigated the complexities of human relationships, experiencing the warmth of family and friends, the wisdom of mentors and the power of shared experiences. At St Augustine’s, we are more than just individuals; we are a united community – a diversity of backgrounds, talents and dreams. This unity, this sense of belonging and the support we offer one another, define us as a St Augustine’s community in which we grow, learn and flourish.

Partnership: Augustine's journey was enriched by his collaborations with fellow thinkers and scholars. Through dialogue and exchange, he deepened his understanding of faith and the world. In a similar manner, our school is a partnership between students, teachers, parents and the broader community. It is within these partnerships that we discover the transformative power of shared knowledge, perspectives and efforts. Just as Augustine engaged in fruitful discussions, we, too, learn and thrive through collaboration and partnership.

Human Flourishing: Augustine's early years were marked by a pursuit of pleasure and worldly desires, yet he eventually realised that true human flourishing is found in the pursuit of higher truths and virtues. He turned away from transitory joys and embraced the path of spiritual and intellectual growth. This journey serves as a profound reminder that our pursuit of knowledge, character and holiness is what truly leads to human flourishing. At St Augustine’s College, we encourage students to flourish by nurturing not only their minds but also their hearts and souls.

Faithfulness: Augustine's life embodies the virtue of faithfulness. His path was paved with doubts and questions, yet he remained steadfast in his commitment to seek and serve God. This quality of unwavering dedication is a beacon of light for us in a world often characterised by change and uncertainty. Just as Augustine clung to his faith, we are encouraged to stand firm in our values and beliefs, no matter the challenges we face.

Learning for Life: Augustine's quest for knowledge was boundless. His love for learning extended beyond formal education and carried him throughout his life. His writings reflect an insatiable curiosity and a profound understanding of the importance of lifelong learning. Similarly, our school recognises that education is not confined to the classroom; it is a journey that lasts a lifetime. It is an invitation to continually seek wisdom, growth and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

May St Augustine’s courage to seek truth, his commitment to his faith and his dedication to lifelong learning inspire us to live with intention and purpose. Let us celebrate this feast day by renewing our commitment to our college values – by fostering an environment of inclusivity and support, by nurturing our individual and collective growth, by standing strong in our beliefs and by embracing the journey of lifelong learning.

May God bless each one of you abundantly and may the legacy of St. Augustine shine brightly in all that you do.
