VM/VPC Numeracy

Data and Probability

This term, the theme in Numeracy for VCE-VM and VPC has been Data and Probability.

Students interpreted a variety of data through several activities.  These included self-generated data (through an experiment with their body temperatures after putting their hands in ice water) and a study of the salaries of AFL players and international sportspeople.

They also developed a survey for Year 11 students about their attitudes to gambling which revealed delightfully surprising results. One of the questions was 'Should there be gambling advertising at sports events?' and the answer was overwhelmingly 'no'.

The course is assessed through completion of a class booklet, assessment checkpoints and a Making a Game Task.

The attached photos are from the VPC class and show the making process and the games they created. With a view to hopefully visit a local primary school to trial the games, students demonstrated good planning and attention to detail, one example being the decision to curve the corners of the cards to prevent injury.

As well as creating card games the class demonstrated project management and collegiality - and had oodles of fun trialling the games amid shrieks of laughter and calls of cheating. It was very enjoyable, if not sometimes noisy. 😊
