Confirmation

On the 12th of August most of the Year Sixes celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation at St John's Mitcham. The students participated in Mass beautifully and were able to renew their baptismal promises that were made at their Baptism. Here are a few reflections from our Year 6 students.

At the start I was kind of nervous and kind of excited then with ease I calmed down. When I placed my candle down and the teachers lit it I nimbly went to sit back down with my family and my sponsor. Alfie (6C)

Slowly the nervous and scared students walked down the aisle with their sponsors next to them. They knelt down to the ground as being blessed with the Holy Spirit. It was finally my turn and my sponsor (my aunty) stood beside me with happiness and joy that I am taking this step of my faith. Once I was confirmed I sat back down with a smile on my face. After that we arrived back home and celebrated with nibbles and dessert. My family watched the Matildas game and screamed and cheered as they won the penalty shoot out. After all, my day was really special and I wish I could do it again. Jessica L (6D)

I was very very nervous as I got down on my knees. As I was being confirmed I felt the holy spirit come and then as fast as possible I was filled with the holy spirit. With ease I stood up and got a photo with my mum who was my proxy. Zara (6C)

I felt like a ship was sinking in my stomach as I got closer, closer and closer to the front of that line. I could feel so many eyes on me, or maybe it was my imagination. It truly was nerve-racking how many people I didn't know there. However, I felt comfortable when my sponsor, who was my grandfather, quite fondly said to me ‘everything would be alright’. I remember kneeling down in front of Bishop Tomlinson as I felt the Holy Spirit sending my spirit up to the heavens to be confirmed. When I had said ‘Amen’ and ‘With your spirit’, I could feel a large sense of pressure taken off my back, as if the Titanic itself was being lifted off me. The Bishop's large, welcoming smile let me know that I was welcome into the Kingdom of God. I could feel a smile rising from me as I went with my sponsor to sit down, happy to see that I was finally confirmed. I was happy that my family had managed to experience a very important time of my life. Zach R (6D)

All the nervous students had to walk down the aisle one by on with their sponsor. My sponsor was my Nanny. Finally, it was my turn to kneel down in front of the bishop and say the responses to what he said which was “Amen” and “and with your spirit”. He marked my forehead with slimy stuff in the shape of a cross. After I stood up, I walked over to Mrs Plunkett to have a photo with my Nanny, relieved that I had finished what I was worried about. Bethany H (6C)

I was so nervous as I walked into the Church. I saw my sponsor and I showed where we were supposed to sit. Then I got called out to go to the Narthex. I walked down the aisle with my candle and the teachers lit it and stuck it in a bowl of sand with the other candles then the mass had started. Xavier and I said the first and second reading, then me and my uncle started to walk down the aisle with the other students. I said my vows and then I was confirmed after that all of my aunties and uncles came over to our house and we watched the Matildas win the quarter finals. Isaac W (6D)

Thank you to the teachers and families who attended the Confirmation in support of our candidates.
