Year 8 Poetry Contest Showcases Creativity and Confidence

On Thursday 18th June, the Library was transformed into a celebration of creativity, courage and self-expression as Year 8 students gathered for the 2026 Poetry Contest. Twenty talented poets, representing each Year 8 English class, took to the stage to perform their original poems in front of their peers and judges. Students explored a wide range of themes including nature, sport, social media, overconsumption, environmental issues, friendship and personal reflection.

The audience demonstrated outstanding respect and encouragement throughout the event, listening attentively and applauding each performer as they shared their work. The contest provided a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate diverse perspectives and appreciate the power of poetry to communicate ideas, emotions and experiences.

Congratulations to James Bransdon (8A), whose poem The Game of Golf earned him the title of 2026 Year 8 Poetry Champion. Congratulations also to Matilda Wallace (8A), who was named Runner-Up for her thoughtful and engaging poem Is Rain the Only Thing That Changed?

A special congratulations goes to 8A, whose collection of performers impressed the judges with their creativity, confidence and strong delivery, securing first place overall. 8E finished in second place, with 8D claiming third place in a closely contested competition.

Thank you to all students who participated and shared their original work, as well as our judges, Pak Wytkamp and Mrs Keane; with Mr Shefford hosting the event and along with Gerry, for their support and feedback. The contest was a fantastic showcase of the talent, effort and imagination of our Year 8 students, and we look forward to seeing their writing continue to flourish throughout the year.
