Guling - School Update

A Strong Culture of Learning

This semester, our staff and students have worked incredibly hard to build a strong culture of learning. Weekly small assemblies have given students the chance to practise and prepare their public speaking ahead of our bigger events. Whether speaking at whole-school assemblies or delivering the Acknowledgement of Country in front of the Prime Minister, MITS students continually impress us with their courage and the clarity of their message when presenting.

Our staff have worked just as hard to support this ever-improving culture of learning, presenting students with unique and engaging lessons, partnerships and projects. This term, the Year 7 team explored Ancient History — and gave students an incredible opportunity to bring it to life.

Year 7 Ancient History Incursion

Our Year 7 students enjoyed an exciting Ancient History Incursion, where they explored life in the ancient world through hands-on activities, role-plays and interactive challenges. Students learned about rulers and subjects, warriors and warfare, sports and status, and the fascinating world of gladiators, discovering how people lived, worked and competed in ancient societies.

All students participated enthusiastically throughout the day, showing our school value of Respect by listening carefully and engaging positively with our external presenter. Many students also showed Courage and embraced the experience by dressing up, adding to the fun and immersive atmosphere. It was a fantastic day of learning, teamwork and historical exploration!

Year 8 Leadership

A culture of learning only happens with student buy-in and leadership, and our Year 8 students have taken on this role with incredible care and purpose. They have set the standard for assembly presentations, represented the school at the KGI Leadership Summit, and were recognised at the ResourceSmart Awards — taking out Campus Infrastructure and Operations School of the Year.

Most excitingly, our Year 8s have worked through the Student Representative Council (SRC) to create a school-wide positive behaviour support system: a student-designed framework that encourages and reminds every student of the behaviours that help us all succeed at school. We can't wait to launch this student-led initiative at the start of Term 3.

A Community to Be Proud Of

We are surrounded by incredible young people who speak, share and create work that reflects their own cultures and, in doing so, deepens and enriches the culture here at MITS. The Year 8s' commitment to learning and to being exceptional role models, together with the Year 7s who now truly know what school looks like in Melbourne and continually demonstrate their courage, care and consistency, leaves us proud of how far our students have come — and excited for what next semester holds.
