Learning in Weeks 5 & 6

In Reading, we will continue working our way through the C.R.A.F.T. reading strategies (C.R.A.F.T focuses on Comprehension; Response to Text; Accuracy; Fluency and Terms and Vocabulary). In Weeks 5 and 6 we will focus on developing our fluency skills and looking carefully at punctuation to guide our reading. We will also be learning some research skills and practising note taking - students will identify important information from a text and use concise language to take notes.

In Writing, we have completed our learning block on persuasive texts. All students were able to showcase their learning by delivering some excellent pieces in this week's Cold Write. In Weeks 5 and 6, our focus will turn to information texts. Students will build their understanding of text structure and begin creating their own information piece about an Australian Aid Agency - linking to this term's Topic lessons.

In Mathematics, our weeks are broken into 2 sections. On Mondays and Fridays we focus on an Applied area of Mathematics and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, our students move into 'fluid groups' to develop their understanding of Number and Algebra.

Our Applied topic for Week 5 continues to be 'Chance and Probability'. Students will complete a post assessment Learning Task on Friday to demonstrate their growth in this topic. In Week 6, we will change our focus to 'Location and Transformation'.

In Week 5, we will continue to work on 'Patterns and Algebra' in our fluid groups. This focus will then change to 'Fractions and Decimals' in Week 6. Each class will focus on a specific area of the curriculum that is relevant to students' specific needs. This need has been determined through pre-testing of the topic, before moving into groups.

In Topic, our Term 2 unit is called, 'Think Global, Act Local'. Students will learn about the biggest problems facing children around the world today. In Weeks 5 and 6, students will continue to explore and learn about charities in our local area and how we can help as individuals.

In STEAM, the Grade 5 students are enjoying learning how to use the new Tinkercad program. They have had success in designing their own name label to print.

The Grade 6 students continue to explore simple circuits in our Electricity unit. In weeks 5 and 6, students will begin an 'Electricity Design Challenge' where they will work in small groups to create either a torch, a desk fan or a steadiness tester board game.
