Hello PLC 4 families,

This term in our classrooms we have continued our enjoyment of Roald Dahl books by reading 'The BFG'. We have been practicing our reading strategies of summarising and making connections. We have been exploring how our connections further help us understand the text, and how we can use them to help us solve many of the fantastic made up words that Roald Dahl uses, like swizzfiggling, muckfrumping, fizzwiggler, buzzburgers, strawbunkles.

Numeracy this term has seen us explore multiplication and division. We have applied multiplication strategies to solving different equations, and explored how multiplication and division are related.

Finally, we are excited to provide an update on camp. We will be attending Coastal Forest Lodge in Anglesea from Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th September 2024. We will be spending one day at the beach participating in a session run by Ecologic learning all about the beach and a tour of the light house. We will also be chocolatier for the day when we attend The Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery. Students will also get to experience a range of different activities at the lodge, including archery, hut building and mini golf. We are very excited to offer this opportunity to our students. More information to follow on Compass.

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

Greetings PLC5 Parents, guardians and carers,

We welcome you back from the school holidays and hope that has been a smooth transition back to school after the holiday break. As we dive into the second term, we wanted to take a moment to update you on what your child has been learning and experiencing during these first two weeks back.

Inferencing Skills with "The Way of Dog"

In Reading, the students have been honing their inferencing skills through the exploration of the text "The Way of Dog." This captivating story has provided a rich foundation for understanding how to draw conclusions and make educated guesses based on evidence within the text. By delving into the areas of character motivations, plot developments, and setting descriptions, the students are developing critical thinking abilities that will serve them well across all subjects.

Descriptive Writing: Iconic Landscapes and Landmarks

In our Writing sessions, students have been delving into the art of descriptive writing, focusing specifically on iconic landscapes and landmarks. From the majestic Grand Canyon to the intricate architecture of the Eiffel Tower, the students have been challenged to vividly depict these locales using sensory details and emotive language. Encourage them to share their descriptive pieces with you at home—they may surprise you with their eloquence!

Mathematics Review: The Four Operations and 2D Shapes

In Numeracy, we have been revisiting fundamental concepts to ensure a strong foundation for future learning. Your child has been reviewing the four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—through a variety of engaging activities and problem-solving tasks. Additionally, we've been exploring the world of 2D shapes, investigating their properties, relationships, and real-world applications. This hands-on approach helps solidify understanding and prepares students for more complex mathematical concepts down the road.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership especially during this tough time at Delacombe Primary School. If you ever have any questions, feedback, or ideas, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Here's to a successful remainder of the semester!

Thanks again,

PLC5

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Welcome back to Term 2 everyone! We hope you all had an amazing Easter and a well deserved holiday.

We have got plenty to look forward to throughout the term 🙂

Last week we were fortunate enough that the weather held out so we could have a smoking ceremony which was held on the oval. This was a part of our unveiling and official recognition of our school murals. It was a great afternoon to be involved in.

In the classroom

Reading- ANZAC day has been a focus in the classroom with our word of the week being ‘sacrifice’ students were exposed to The Last Post and The Ode and the meaning behind them

Writing- We have had a big focus on Australia and our states and territories. Students are in the middle of writing a description on ‘Australian Outback’

Numeracy- Addition and Subtraction is our focus and we will be moving into Multiplication and Division next week. Please remind your child the importance of our times tables and if you have spare time at home to practise these please 🙂
