Vanuatu

To the school community, THANK YOU!! for supporting our first fundraising event for the 2024 Vanuatu Mission trip. We have been blessed in abundance with student and staff participation, and the beautiful weather to create a lovely atmosphere to end Term 1. The Mission Team are excited and looking forward to running a few more events during Term 2 - seems we will need a lot more popcorn!

Chess

A couple of weeks ago, a group of eleven students from Leighland proudly represented our school at the Northwest Regional Chess Tournament. The Team: Jireh Handley, Caleb Lennon, Tyler Keating, Luke Allan, Luke Brooks-Lloyd, Peter Bull, William Davis, Caleb Williams, and Joshua Hills from Year 10, alongside Aaron Zanus from Year 11, and accompanied by Ms Bellis. They faced off against talented opponents from schools across the Northwest, showcasing their strategic skills and determination.

As the morning unfolded, everyone started off incredibly well. At lunch, a large percentage of our players won every game they played. This outstanding performance pushed Leighland to the top of the leaderboard. However, the lead was slim due to fierce competition and the high level of play from all participating schools.

As the day advanced, the challenge of the games grew. Despite the increasing difficulty, every member of the Leighland team displayed resilience and a commendable spirit of competition. This tournament was not just about individual games or victories; it was a collective effort that highlighted the importance of teamwork, strategy, and perseverance. Each player, regardless of the outcome of their games, contributed to the overall standing and spirit of the Leighland team. Their ability to support one another, analyse their games and prepare for the next challenge was inspiring.

The chance to verse other people from other schools was somewhat new to many of the players, but this didn’t stop them from doing their best. As a school we landed second place overall, just below the leaders by less than 3 points!

Regardless of where Leighland ultimately stood on the leaderboard, each player returned as a champion, having given their best and embraced the true spirit of competition.

Cheers,

Joshua Forman (Year 10)

Camp Clayton

Year 7 students were blessed with a beautiful day at the end of last term, to explore all that Camp Clayton has to offer, and to grow in their own faith walk. The Giant Swing was the crowd favourite, with the flying fox, rock climbing and the high ropes course proving to be exciting challenges as students encouraged and cheered each other on to extend themselves and be courageous!

New friendships were made, many laughs were shared, and life-long memories captured in their hearts. We ended the day with a devotion, followed by a time of quiet prayer and writing a reflection in their personal journals of how they have been Jesus' hands and feet in their interactions with their peers during the excursion.

The Year 7 Taster Day is a fantastic opportunity for Year 6 students to grow in confidence as they experience what Year 7 will be like, ensuring a smooth transition to high school. They will meet new students, learn how to use a timetable, engage with new subjects, move around the school to different classrooms and meet their new teachers.

Year 5/6 Choral Group - Festival of Voices

Our Year 5/6 Choral Group from Ulverstone Campus are excited to share with our school community that we are off to Hobart at the end of this term to participate in Festival of Voices!!

Each year, the Festival organises a combined school's concert called Young Tasmania Sings and this year we were invited to participate, and we were also chosen to receive a travel grant from Festival organisers.  This is so incredibly exciting for our students as they will be performing with hundreds of other students ranging from Year 5 – Year 8, and they will have the awesome experience of working with world-renowned Children’s Choir Conductor, Mr Anthony Trecek-King.  Anthony was a guest at the Festival a few years ago with his own Choir, the Boston Children’s Chorus, who are absolutely phenomenal.

The grant we have received covers the cost of our transport to Hobart and back which is really amazing.  However, that still leaves the families of our students the unexpected expense of paying for the remaining costs - accommodation, time away from work for some accompanying parents, all meals, etc.

We are reaching out to our school community to help us fundraise so that nobody has to miss out on this incredible opportunity.  We have some fundraising events planned for later this term so please keep your eye out for those – we will be most grateful for your support.

We have already had some lovely support from local politician, Gavin Pearce, and more is hopefully on the way from some of our other MPs.  We would also like to invite any families or businesses represented in our school community to support us further by sponsoring our trip with a donation if you felt you would like to.

Thank you everybody!

Bikes & Scooters

Dear Parents

Due to safety concerns, we cannot have bikes and scooters being ridden in our car park when cars are present. There have been a few close calls with bikes and cars, and we do not wish for any injuries to occur.

It’s been lovely to see some children getting active and riding around on bikes and scooters after school, however, please direct your children to ride on safe bike paths and designated areas.
