CSEN Soccer

Our Girls team competed in the Intermediate (Year 9/10) age group, though we relied on some Year 7 and 8 girls to field a full team.

The team came together exceptionally well considering many of them don't play together regularly.

They won their first group game 1-0, with a goal in the dying minutes after dominating possession and having many opportunities to score. The confidence from that win carried over into their other group game which they convincingly won 2-0.

The team work they demonstrated by running hard for each other and supporting each other in defence was incredible to watch, and the girls didn't concede a goal all day!

The Gold Medal match was a tense affair and ended in a 0-0 deadlock, forcing a penalty shootout. Nerves were at an all-time high, but with our goal keeper, Meg, saving the first attempt from the opposition, our girls composed themselves to score at every attempt and claim the Championship!!

Thank you Anja, Portia and Meg, for leading the team as rotating captains today. Well done Emily, Isabella, Lucy, Mia and Aysa for your excellent play and teamwork! And a huge thank you to Chelsea, Olivia and Ella, who were our Year 7 and 8 girls that filled in and made it possible to field a team - you all played incredibly against the older players.

Congratulations!

Our intermediate boys team consisted of a combination of Year 10s and Year 8s to compete at the CSEN Championship. Due to this, many of them haven't played together before and for some of the students, they don't play soccer regularly. Competing in a pool of 3, we need to win one of our 2 groups games to assure a place in the semi finals. In the first game, after all the attacking, we couldn't find a way to put the soccer ball in the back of the net, which is not ideal in soccer. This proved to be the difference, as with 3 minutes to go, the opposition scored 1 of their only 2 chances for the game. This loss meant we needed a big game in game 2 as we needed to win due to the way other results played out. Although the boys played exceptionally well, again we couldn't score a goal and the game finished 0-0 to the eventual premiers. We had a final game for the day in which the students managing to hit the score board with a 5-0 win. Well done to all students who represented MECS exceptionally well.

CSEN Sports Reps

On Monday 6 May, we had two students, Zac King (Year 10) & Maggie Draffin (Year 8) not only represent MECS but also represent CSEN (Christian Schools Events Network) at the Victorian Schools Association Competition. Due to their performances for MECS at the CSEN Championships in March earlier this year, they were selected to be part of the association representative team. These are our first two students to represent MECS/CSEN at this level since joining CSEN and it is an incredible achievement. Both students performed well on the night and represented both MECS and CSEN extremely well.

Congratulations to both students!

Secondary Tribal Athletics

On Tuesday 7 May we held our 2024 Secondary Athletics Carnival. It was an incredible May Day. When we arrived at the track to set up at 8am, the fog had set in, making it hard to see the other side of the track but as the fog lifted shortly after, it showed signs of a great day ahead and it certainly turned out to be true.

As the students got off their buses at Morrison Reserve, there were all sorts of costumes and dress ups representing their Tribal colours. Students were ready for a good day of athletics action. It was also great to see headbands being made in Tribal colours to support their Tribe along with all the encouragement given as students were running, throwing and jumping in the different events. We saw some incredible achievements throughout the day in both the track and field events and look forward to seeing some of our students represent the school at the CSEN Athletics Championships Day in Term 3.

Thank you to all the staff for all their amazing efforts on the day and to all students for getting involved and also helping out the teachers on different stations.

CSEN Basketball

On Thursday 2 May, selected students from Years 7-10 competed in the CSEN Basketball Championship at Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre. Our teams showcased remarkable skill and sportsmanship throughout the event, representing our school with pride and determination. We commend our students for their outstanding efforts and for their excellent display of teamwork and perseverance on the court. Congratulations to all involved for a fantastic interschool sport basketball day!

MECS participated in the basketball championships which happened in the city. It was a really fun day playing basketball and we all enjoyed it. We played 6 games in the day, with various breaks as well. Some games were really challenging and some were where we could just get out there and have some fun. It was a really good team bonding experience because we were all playing as a team and working together. I think our team was really strong, we had some ups and downs but we managed to get 4th in the state for Christian schools in Victoria!

As a basketball enthusiast I was filled with excitement when I got the opportunity to play for MECS in the CSEN basketball tournament with all my friends. The day was filled with the sounds of swishes, bouncing basketballs, and squeaking shoes. There were plenty of exciting games and challenging opponents but that didn't stop us from having an amazing time working together as a team to snatch up a few wins for our school.

The Basketball championship day was an absolute ripper. Year 7-10 students had the opportunity to participate in a round robin tournament against CSEN schools from all around Victoria/Melbourne. The Year 7 and 8 team definitely improved as the day went on, starting with 3 consecutive losses we improved our teamwork and skill execution. We ended up winning both our next games. The final game (Bronze medal match) we ended up losing by only two points, everyone was devastated. Despite not being the best team I am sure that everyone enjoyed the experience and would want to come again next time.

Upon arriving at the arena, we were immediately greeted by the sound of people playing. We patiently waited for our turn to play and it was a few hours before we finally got our chance. However, the wait didn't feel long at all as we were busy chatting and making new friends. When we finally got to play our first game, we had an amazing time and even managed to win. Although we didn't come in first place, we all had a great time and would do it again.
