Year 10 Visual Art

Year 10 Visual Art students recently participated in an excursion that involved a walking journey along the Riverwalk from New Farm to Howard Smith Wharves to document the sights of the city, river and natural environment, through drawings and photographs. They will utilise these images in a mixed media artwork as part of their current unit of work, “The Edge” which focuses on the intersection between the natural and built environments. Following the Riverwalk, the excursion also included a visit to the Museum of Brisbane to view the exhibition, “Making Place: 100 views of Brisbane.”

In Week 1, Year 10 students also had an opportunity to engage in a digital art and media workshop with Brisbane artist, illustrator, muralist, fashion designer and musician, Phoebe Paradise. Phoebe has been the face of a recent National Apple marketing campaign and her work has been part of many high-profile festivals, events and locations including Splendour in the Grass, Laneway Festival, BIGSOUND, 4ZZZ, Museum of Brisbane, Amnesty International,  QLD Music Festival, Outerspace at the Judith Wright Centre and Howard Smith Wharves. The students learnt how to use the drawing app, Procreate to develop digital drawings of a still-life composition.

Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art

We are very proud to share that the artwork of 2023 Marist Old Boy, Gabriel Dinneen is currently on show at the Gallery of Modern Art. Gabriel was one of only 37 excellence award recipients from 459 individual submissions from 177 schools from around the state. His sculptural installation, “Resistance” is part of the central exhibition at GOMA which runs from Saturday 27 April until Sunday 25 August. Elijah Smith (MCA Old Boy 2023) also received a commendation award for his artwork, “Unburdened Mind.” Since 1990, the awards recognise and promote excellence in Senior Visual Art and have raised community awareness of the degree of sophistication in concepts, diversity of technical competence, and the high standard of visual art education in Queensland secondary schools.

Gabriel’s Artist Statement

“Resistance”  Paint and paper collage on timber door, 80.5cm x 200cm

Indigenous people have been resisting since the moment the ships arrived, standing strong against massacres, land-theft, disease and racism.  Resistance is about the persecution of the First Nations cultures and resistance throughout time. It uses personal and cultural context to communicate a contemporary issue. The portrait on each side of the door depicts the same Elder warrior spirit overseeing resistance using different tools, from spears and shields to words and political protest.

The artwork is painted on two sides of a door to show a passage through time, with the images of resistance in early colonisation being black and white and modern resistance in colour.  The white side of the door includes engraving with a wood burning tool, to reference Indigenous deaths in custody. The viewer interacts with the artwork by opening the door to see how First Nations resistance began and has continued into the modern day; it isn’t something new but has been there since the beginning of colonisation.
