THE VILLAGE

The Village: Supporting Student Wellbeing Together
At Korumburra Secondary College, we believe in the value of community and its power in supporting the health and wellbeing of our young people. The Village is here to support that journey. This section provides evidence-based resources that align with our school’s wellbeing strategy, offering practical tools for students, families, and staff. From mental health support to fostering resilience and positive relationships, The Village is designed to empower our community with knowledge and strategies to help every student thrive.
Pop Culture Parenting
Pop Culture Parenting is a podcast created by developmental paediatrician Dr. Billy Garvey and his friend Nick, designed to provide evidence-based approaches for supporting parents and building the capacity of professionals who work with young people. Moving forward, we will reference some of their work, as it closely aligns with our school’s approach to student wellbeing and development.
In the podcast, Billy and Nick analyse popular movies from the 1980s and 1990s to provide real-world context for their parenting advice. Each episode begins with a discussion of their own parenting experiences from the past few weeks. If you prefer to skip straight to the evidence-based discussion, we will provide a timestamp for when the analysis begins.
This week, we have chosen their episode on “Success in School”, which is particularly relevant at the start of the school year. The episode focuses on school transitions—an important topic as many of our students navigate key milestones in their education. While our new Year 7 students have made a fantastic start to secondary school, they are not the only ones facing significant transitions.
Our Year 11s are adjusting to VCE and VCE-VM, our Year 12s are embarking on their final year of schooling, and many students are preparing for their career pathways beyond school. These are all critical moments that can bring added pressure, making mental health support more important than ever.
