Round 2 saw the Saints' Year 7 and 8/9 teams take on Bentley Park College. Despite being outmuscled by a strong Bentley Park side, the Year 7 team showed marked improvement following their Round 1 loss. Meanwhile, the Year 8/9 team fought hard to secure a 22-16 victory with Siaosi Tutoe and Joeli Rokocibi (3 tries) leading the way for the squad.
In Round 3, both teams delivered impressive performances against Cairns SHS, securing well-deserved wins. The Year 7 team celebrated their first victory of the season, edging out their opponents 20-16 in a tightly contested match. The Year 8/9 team also displayed strong form, claiming a 20-10 win.
Week 8 saw the teams face off against Woree SHS in a crucial round to determine their final standings ahead of the Round 5 bye. The Year 7 team aimed to continue their winning streak, engaging in a thrilling, back-and-forth encounter with multiple lead changes throughout the match. Tied 14-14 in the dying minutes, a pinpoint cross-field kick from Jimmy Anderson found Kaden Ferguson, who pounced to give Saints the lead with just two minutes to go. Saxton Rohweder’s third try from the kick-off sealed a 26-14 victory, with tries scored by Saxton Rohweder (3), Jack Brimstone, and Kaden Ferguson.
The Year 8/9 team, playing for a spot in the grand final, faced an intense battle with their opponents in an arm-wrestle of a game. Despite a determined defensive effort, poor ball control proved costly, and the boys couldn’t secure the win. Both teams qualified in third place and will play the minor final in Week 10.
Meanwhile, Saints U15 and First XIII teams kicked off their seasons with trial matches against Woree SHS as they prepare for the upcoming Cowboys Challenge and Aaron Payne Cup campaigns. Both teams secured wins in their fixtures and are looking good as they continue to build ahead of their season. These games were the first official matches at our new home ground, Cairns Showgrounds. A huge thank you to @aitch.visuals for capturing the action!
