Principal's Report

Flexible. Resilient. Positive. 2024

We have had another wonderful fortnight at Rangeview! Levels 2, 4, 5 and 6 completed their swimming week, the wellbeing student leaders launched a new lunchtime group 'Mindful Mondays', 90 Level 3 & 4 students participated in Hoop Time at Nunawading stadium, Ms McLeod, Mrs Tzimos and I attended a Riversdale Network Numeracy Leaders Day, Mr Sommers and Ms Anderson together with our Wellbeing student leaders attended the Respectful Relationships Forum, all grades across the school participated in Cyber Safety Project Incursion lessons, and the staff all participated in a personal cyber security training session, and the whole school celebrated National Reconciliation Week which culminated in a 'splash of colour' day with a gold coin donation for Children's Ground - a First Nations Charity.

Riversdale Network Numeracy Leaders Day

On Thursday 6th, Kate McLeod, Vicki Tzimos and I attended the Riversdale Network Numeracy Leaders Day where we heard from Professor Peter Liljedahl of Simon Fraser University, Canada. Professor Liljedahl unpacked his Building Thinking Classrooms model with us and we considered how we might implement this work into our school.

Building Thinking Classrooms was sparked by observing dozens and dozens of teachers struggle to engage students in deep thinking and problem solving, and observing hundreds of students engaged in a lot of behaviour that didn’t include thinking—or learning—Peter set out to find the answer to a simple question: How can we get more students to think and to think longer?

Over the next 15 years, he set a research course to break every institutional norm possible to see what shifts could get students thinking. Out of this research grew 14 specific norm-busting teaching practices that have proven to enhance thinking—and thus learning in hundreds of thousands of classrooms around the world. And it doesn’t stop there. Not only do the 14 practices enhance thinking, they enhance other competencies in students such as collaboration, perseverance, risk-taking. Further, they enhance access and equity to learning and student autonomy and ownership of learning

The second session on the day was with Dan Steele of Growth Coaching International and

had a focus on Growth Coaching as leaders in schools. Education and learning are sustained by the quality of interactions and relationships between individuals and within groups. The conscious way we act and contribute in different conversational contexts can positively impact relationships and help others move towards their goals.

Coaching conversations are essentially helping conversations. Conversations that help another individual think with more clarity, feel more hopeful and ultimately exert greater influence on their situation.

Cyber Safety Project

On Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th our whole school participated in Cyber Safety sessions with the team from the Cyber Safety Project. Home - Cyber Safety Project

The students learned more about being safe and responsible digital citizens, and also about how to recognise when they need to 'unplug' and what activities to do when they switch off devices.

After school on Wednesday 6th our staff participated in a Cyber Safety session with a focus on digital wellbeing and personal cyber security. This was an excellent session with a wealth of learning around managing your own personal online accounts and apps. I would encourage parents to visit www.haveibeenpwned.com  to check if your accounts have been compromised!

There is a series of PL sessions available for parents and carers. Please find more information and the link to this PL in the Teaching and Learning Page of this edition of the newsletter.

Student Led Conferences

Student-led Conferences for Level 1-6 students will be held on Monday 24th June and Wednesday 26th June onsite at Rangeview. Please see the Teaching and Learning  page of this addition for more information. There will be translators available for those families that request this service.

Level 3/4 Hoop Time

On Wednesday 5th June over 90 students from levels 3 and 4 participated in the Hoop Time competition at the Nunawading Stadium. Our Rangeview students were outstanding - both in terms of sportsmanship and skill demonstration. The Hoop Time coordinator commented on the good behaviour of our students and out of 44 games played by Rangeview across 10 teams, we finished with an impressive record of 39 wins and 5 losses.

Thank you to the wonderful Level 5/6 students who attended to coach on the day, to Margi Ang and Tim Kirk for attending to coach, to all of the parents and carers who came to support the students, and especially to Mitch Clark for organising this event for our students.

Pupil Free Day

A reminder to our families, we have a Pupil Free day on Tuesday 11th June (next Tuesday) following the King's Birthday long weekend. Our Their Care program will be offering care for families that need it on this day.
